Although a number of PSX games do run in MESS these days, I'd stick with pSX for now (does it still work in modern Linux?). On a side note, the site seems to have vanished; the forums being dead since 2012.

While some games aren't playable from start to finish, I would have to recommend trying out your game in MESS first before resorting to other emulators.

The core features and options at your disposal that are possible with MAME/MESS are simply too good to pass up even if a performance hit is taken or your game happens to hang at some point.

One example being I was able to finish Lunar Silver Star Story reasonably quickly because I could fast forward battles or slow parts of the game.

I thought .chd files of PSX games, rather than .iso files, were needed in order to run them in MESS.

CHD is obviously supported and is used when softlist loading for PSX. BIN/CUE works from command line and I would assume ISO does as well, but I haven't tested it myself.

One example being:

mess64.exe -rompath "J:\MESS\roms" -hashpath "J:\MESS\hash" psu -mc1 "J:\MESS\software\psu\card1.mc" -cdrom "J:\Castlevania - Symphony of the Night (USA).cue"

We love you too :P

(Getting MESS to run on modern Linux is far, far easier than pSX).

I don't know if it would default to the right sector format and you'll have no red book audio. So I wouldn't recommend trying to use iso.

You are right. Better in bin/cue than iso. ISO will have issues without the cue and what ever else. Wouldn't even know where to start at in the ISO without the time and such.

Hehe, I haven't actually tried MESS recently outside of testing (e.g. seeing if it boots up and playing the first 5 minutes of a game), even though I have been keeping an eye on the PSX topic on the MESS forum, I have only tested a few games and forgot about it (I don't have many games at all, I was a Nintendo kid in the 1990s, only buying a PlayStation in 1999 so I could play the Tekken series, and then being disappointed that all three games had completely different AI that I couldn't exploit in the arcade anyway).

My PS2 collection is an order of magnitude larger however, but I don't see any of my (archaic) PCs running them outside of PCSX2, especially when even that struggles with some games! Hyper Street Fighter II plays full speed, yet Street Fighter Alpha Anthology brings my PC to a crawl, as does Tekken Tag/4/5 and the Grand Theft Auto series. MAME would probably be a slideshow, like playing PSX games on a Raspberry Prius or iFad.

Maybe by then we'll have a modern DRC that can cope with all the cpu's in the ps2 and uses shaders for the rendering.

Yeah, ISO is supported primarily for the benefit of computer OS install CDs, which are also pretty much the only thing anyone should ever rip to that format. It's unsuitable for the large majority of PSX games (only one track, sector format has to be guessed, etc).

System 11 games in MAME run 60/60 on an iPad Air with no hacks, actually
