For certain games the snaps come out all squishy. Also I don't have artwork enabled but when I take the snap the artwork shows up. I have to rename the artwork folder so MAME doesn't detect it in order to get a snap without the artwork.
Something I'm doing wrong?

Snapshots use the resolution needed to produce the image, in this case, 768x224. Simply put, the resolution needed to produce the star field accurately is 3x the normal resolution. If you want to make a viewed ratio snap, 3X the lower value (224 * 3) = 672 and use that in a -snapsize command -snapsize 672x768 for a properly oriented vertical screen.
Not a bug: http://mametesters.org/view.php?id=1664
You'll also see the same type behavior from SNES and PC Engine game snaps, to name a couple, where the hardware has to take in account higher resolution modes.
