Save HLSL settings?
#323630 - 03/22/14 02:49 AM

Hi

Is it possible to save HLSL settings for individual games in MAME64? I've set 'hlsl_write' to 1 in mame.ini, but it doesn't seem to work.

No it is not. Settings can only be permanently modified by editing the .ini file itself. If you mess around with the setting within MAME and come up with something you like, just grab a pencil and paper and write them down so you can change the .ini file afterwards.

That's a shame, as I wanted to use different HLSL settings for different games, based on their resolution.

I'm also a bit confused, as the settings listed at the top of the following page, seem to suggest it's possible.
http://mamedev.org/source/docs/hlsl.txt.html

I'm also sure I read about it somewhere on another site. Maybe I have to compile my own version of MAME to get it working?

Sadly, the source tree showing on mamedev.org is out of date (from 0.148u1). It is a relic from the site moving last year and has not been updated. We've been pointing people to the GIT mirror:

http://git.redump.net/mame/tree

The "hlsl_ini" commands were in the source for a time, but never quite functioning correctly. There was a time where using them crashed the emulator.

http://mametesters.org/view.php?id=5218

There was a lot of user confusion and issues related to having these separate .INI files created. Finally the sliders were updated to default .INI settings and the commands were taken out.

As it stands now, you can use put HLSL settings in the normal .INI files. The config.txt in the DOCS details numerous .INI files which can cover large portions of your gamelist by using such names as "vector.ini", "horizont.ini", "vertical.ini" to cover those output possibilities.

QMC2 have a better save HLSL option. Try that. Make sure that you check the box in the QMC2 to enable it. Save you a lot of head pain over this. Never had a problem when I use this.

I haven't heard of QMC2, before. I'll probably give it a try, but ultimately I want to use a more graphical frontend, as this is for a dedicated MAME setup which uses proper arcade controls.

I keep hearing about Hyper Spin, but haven't gotten round to trying it, yet.

Make sure your computer can handle it.

I use MAMEWAH instead of this.

I've been using Mala for a few years now. Game lists are a special format, but I rarely change them anymore.

Wait...can anyone else confirm this? Are you saying QMC2 *can* in fact save individual game HLSL settings? How can it do it if the actual emulator can't?

It's not a standard build of MAME. It's not that difficult, even for a coding dipshit like myself, to modify the code to have it save settings. As to whether or not it causes stability issues, I have no idea. I've got my HLSL settings right where I want them for my setup, so I have no need to further mess with them.

I can tell you how. Set your paths on the first load. qmc2-mame or qmc2-mess or what ever you use. After it get done then go to your Tools/Options/Emulator. Look for the Configuration. Check that writeconfig box. You are done from there. Each game ini will be save fully. If it not saving in your MAME folder or MESS folder or what ever you use folder then check in the QMC2 folder.
