What the hell is a PL 2303?

A costumer has a shop with a Point Of Sale terminal; a simple Pentium II with a ticket printer, barcode scanner and such. Recently I helped her with reinstalling the whole enchilada and of course I had problems finding dinosaurdrivers. However in the computer I found a driver for something called PL 2303 and I have no idea what it could be. Google says something like usb-to-serial something, but I'm asking for your expertise. Bueller? Bueller?

No, you're right - PL2303 is a USB-to-serial adapter chip made by Prolific. http://www.prolific.com.tw http://www.prolific.com.tw/US/ShowProduct.aspx?pcid=41&showlevel=0041-0041 http://www.prolificusa.com
I've actually used an adapter based off it before. It's probably used for either the barcode scanner or the ticket printer, either one could be a serial device. Look for a dongle attached to one which plugs into USB at one end, and expands to DB9 (or possibly DB25) at the other.
If you don't see one connected to any of the peripheral cables to the printers/scanners, then you can ask your friend if they'd ever replaced one of the peripherals...
What more do you need?

You're right, one of the peripherals uses one of those dongles. Either one of the drivers installs it automatically, or Windows XP doesn't need it, because I've not installed it and everything works. Including things that didn't work before ^_^

Well that was enough man, thanks for the clarification. If you have some spare $375,000 I'll send you my bank account information by PM. I'll pay the expenses of the transfer, don't worry ^_^
