Why is it every time a website revamps its design...

it's almost always for the worse?
"A simple, easy to navigate layout? Nah, what people really want is an unintuitive, cluttered mess with a shit-load of flash!"
Maybe it's my age catching up to me, but fucking hell I'm starting to hate the internet.

The absolute worst is "kinja", the commenting system Gawker Media uses for all of their sites. They must overhaul it once every 3-4 months, and it just gets more buggy and horrible every damn time.

Nah it's not that. Apparently "new design" means following one or more of the following paradigms: * Must use the latest technology, even if technically it hasn't been released yet. * Must reinvent the wheel. * Must not look like a page or document, but more like an app.
It's not that age is catching up to you, but that common sense hasn't catched up with the perpetrators of some of those monstrosities. I see great, really great new designs every day, but apparently the larger is the budget, the worse is the final result.
Customers with no design/implementation knowledge are also the culprits. I offer my customers some really elegant templates to start working; undoubtly 90% of them choose the most visually overloaded and flashy ones.

Usually because the web designs are done by a 3rd party, or contractor that usually has the right ideas and know how, but the shmuck in the marketing department of the client has his own ideas and won't hear anything to the contrary.
I used to do a lot of freelance graphic design stuff and this was ALWAYS my experience. Turned me off to wanting to do it full-time for good.
Also the client always, ALWAYS picks your least favorite design out of the 5 or 6 you present to them.
