a question regarding rom cfg files

the question is as follows. say I have a version of mame around version 109 and I have al the button programmed like I want and the analog controls adjusted. On a newer version of mame will these rom cfg files still be good for the games I have programmed or will they be useless and I will have to reset the buttons and video parameters and analog setting again?

Toss it in the cfg directory then run the latest MAME and let us know the outcome
