Server to home PC?

I got a free server that is a few years old. I've never messed with one before besides doing tape backups for a company many years ago and I don't remember anything about it. Can I just set it up and use it as a normal PC?

I assume x86? Probably. Depends on the power supply. If it is a std type B plug or some funky 220v DC plug.
The graphics chip is probably fairly weak. Probably an old intel graphics chip. If your lucky a 2k or even 3k or really lucky 4k. Just depends on how old.
I usually skip doing that. As the fan noise is quite something from those server class boxes. And they are throwing it away for a reason usually...

It wasn't tossed like that and is barely used. The whole office shut down. I have a GeForce I can put in it but I don't even know if it has a slot for it. I figured servers would need to process video to stream video but on second thought that is probably "just data".

Is it a 1u or 2u? If 2u it might work... If it is fairly new it may have a couple of pcie slots in there for external drive sort of things that may work. If it is a tower it probably will most certainly have what you need. What model is it? Like the ones we just bought for work there would be 0 chance of getting a full height pci card in there... (1u height) Just depends. Some also have very limited space for HDs like the ones we bought have 2 slots.

I'll get you some pics soon. I need it to replace my brother's computer and he does web/video and needs good performance for "Counterstrike". It has a ton of hard drive slots, at least 5-6, but all I need it to do is a 128 gig SSD drive and a slow D drive for mp3s and videos and pdfs. The processor is some Intel xeon or whatever it was called, the server cpu that was being sold around the early Core 2 Duo days. It was expensive as hell in its time. I was kinda hoping it would outperform my computer in which case I could run it myself and setup my rig for him, but I need to fix his situation. He's running a...P4.

Yeah you can use it as a home PC. I have a Dell PowerEdge 1U server which ran Windows 7 and was used as a Minecraft server and some IBM xServe (I think) that could run XP nicely and had 2x Hyper-Threaded Xeons. Usually nothing that stops you using them as a PC but they are more catered to business use.

It's too late now, but the specsheet said:
Expansion slots 1 x PCI Express Gen 2 x16 (x8 speed) 1 x PCI Express Gen 2 x8 (x8 speed) 4 x PCI Express Gen 2 x8 (x4 speed)
So, yeah, you could throw a GeForce or whatever in there.

What they said...
Only reason I wouldnt use it is fan noise and possibly power supply. But the power supply is probably standard if it is a tower.
Not sure what you will get for it if you try to sell it. Hmm looks like people are coming off 1000-1200ish for them. Probably depending on the amount of RAM in them. That would make a nice tax deduction and low hassle getting rid of it?... Does it have a windows sticker on it? That could help with the value.

It has its hard drives removed due to paranoia of the previous owner. It is barely used though, looks all new with no dust. I think I'll probably get $700 but hopefully more.
