MAME issues - black screen?

Heya guys; First try with MAME here; however when I open a ROM I get a black screen and nothing else, not sure why. Was wondering if I could get some help with this? Sega Rally 2 (a Model 3 game) does not work. When you start the game, you should see a RED warning screen which states this specific fact. There is nothing you can do on your end to fix this problem and the only improvements will come from further emulation development, whenever that will be.

You should have seen a red screen at startup that says "THIS GAME IS NOT WORKING".
As we are always trying to improve MAME, is there some way we could re-phrase that which would have enabled you to understand that the emulation of that game does not work?
