Killer Instinct (1): Graphics Quality Confirmation?
#316973 - 11/05/13 07:37 PM Attachment: kinst_ss.zip 836 KB (4 downloads)

Greetings:

I've been doing quite a bit of reading on this topic but I wanted to run it by the pro's of MAMEWorld for confirmation.

MAME Details: v0.148, Linux SDL OpenGL
MAME Video Config: "-video opengl", fullscreen
kinst ROM: (latest version)
kinst Resolution: 320x240
Screed / Monitor: 17" LCD
GLSL / Effecits: none

My understanding is that a lot of older games look "blurry" or "washed out" because we try to run them on high quality LCD's. I actually went to an arcade last night and was able to relive some CRT quality and see all the scanlines. The element of CRT screens does seem to hide quite a bit of the graphic imperfections.

I'm just looking for confirmation that the graphics I'm seeing on Killer Instinct are the best possible with an LCD. I wanted to make sure that I'm not missing any special settings that can help to make the graphics look sharper. I don't have any original Killer Instinct arcade machines nearby (wasn't one at the arcade) to compare with.

I've read some people state that windows builds of MAME (using DirectX) give better quality graphics. Is this true? If so, is it the HLSL shaders providing the advantage?

Also, the native resolution (from the driver in the source) for kinst seems to be 320x240. Was Killer Instinct really that low of a resolution? I would have guessed 640x480.

Attached are some kinst screenshots from my system for review (zipped). I admit that seeing the screenshots at 320x240, they look right. I guess the blurriness problem occurs when running the game fullscreen.

Also, I am not running with any effects or shaders.

Thanks for any info.

Thank you for the suggestions - I will try them tonight.

Based on:
http://mamedev.org/source/docs/windows.txt

... both "-filter" and "-prescale" are listed as Windows (directx) video options. I checked other configuration docs for MAME but don't see these options mentioned anywhere else. Are there SDL (*nix) equivalents?

you couldn't have picked a worse game TBH when it comes replicating the correct look, I think KI & KI2 look like dog shit whatever filters/HLSL combination you use..

YUK!!!...I've tried all sorts with these games, but nothing seems to work.

I think it's mainly because they used such low resolution rendered sprites...just don't look right on anything but a mint condition CRT monitor.

Hah - thanks for the info

As long as I'm not missing something, and getting the best "look" possible, that's all I care about. I have also tried Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and a few others with good results. I'm still on the hunt for a real KI arcade machine to check for visual differences.

The screenshot you posted is exactly how mine looks, save for your scanline effect. I did test KI with the 75x2 scanline effect from this board and it looks slightly better.

Ziggy: what MAME build are you using (DirectX / SDL)? Effects? In your opinion, what has given you best results?

Both of those switches exist with the same name and function on SDL builds.

Thanks Belmont.
