Using MAME with Linux

Hi,
I'm trying to use MAME with GNU/Linux and I have some problems. I'm using Gentoo, and it is very poorly documented. The manpage is simply this:
" Started in 1997 by Nicola Salmoria, MAME was originally intended as a series of emulators for individual games, which were later combined into a single multi-game emulator. In the following years, MAME grew over and over up to the actual size, with more than 100 contributors to the project."
The rest is just a list of arguments.
I had some ROMs that worked before, with a different version of MAME under Linux Mint. Now with Gentoo, some of them do not work.
E.g. for Salamander 2 I get:
salmndr2 : 300a01.34k (131072 bytes) - NOT FOUND (konamigx)
When I run -verifyroms.
I didn't need this file before, so why do I need it now? What has changed?
From a list of what files the romset (Salamander 2) should contain, I noticed that 300a01.34k is a "merged" file. What is a merged file?
What utility, for Linux, should I use to manage my romsets? How do I get Salamander 2 working?

ClrMAMEPro works through Wine on Linux and Mac, but for non-Windows your best bet is to just find a ROM torrent site that updates on every MAME release and build up some ratio.

And on Mac OSX for that matter...

It works. I ran it on wine before without a problem.

There is no need to run Mame through Wine. It works just just fine as a Linux native client as long as you have the proper roms and bioses. No since running an emulator in another emulator.
The only issue I have with it in Linux the joystick dead zone. Can't get rid of it. Haven't been able to determine if it is an issue with the X server or Mame itself.

Nobody said anything about running MAME through Wine....you asked what you should use to manage your ROMs: http://mamedev.emulab.it/clrmamepro/ But there's no Linux version.

You *do* know who you're telling this to, right? ;-)
