Ok, so moon= low ISO and high shutter speed
#314652 - 09/17/13 04:55 PM Attachment: IMG_0052.JPG 123 KB (1 downloads)

By far the best pic I've ever taken of the moon.
Cheap ass lens too

Edit: Now I have to try it again... hope I have a good view again tonight. Need to try f/16 1/200 ISO200 (or 1/100 ISO100).

Dammit you're not looking up through as much haze as me. Living right on Sydney Harbour has its drawbacks. All the moisture in the air acts as a big diffuser. (300mm f/5.6 ISO200 1/500s)

He's just joshing around... we all know you don't need to flip the camera over... that's just being silly... simply vertically flipping the photo will do.

Guess it was an awesome night to try because I tried several pics last night with a full moon and couldn't get the same level of detail. But maybe it's a haze thing as well... the pic in the original post was taken the night (or 2?) after the tropical cyclone went through. Nothing like a typhoon to bring crystal clear skies! (ironic)

I may have done some light/contrast editing on this one...

Spot on full moon gets you lower contrast because the sun is pretty much in the exact opposite direction to the moon. Contrast is better when the sun is at a bit of an angle, so you get defined shadows around the raised features.

I'm the beginner here, but I'd say the lens is every bit as important as the camera, if not more. I used a Canon 60D and a cheap Sigma lens for that shot (70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG MACRO) with manual settings 1/250s 300mm f/8 ISO100.

Any upper midrange Nikon (D90/D7000) or Canon (60D/70D) DSLR will do the job. Lenses are definitely more important than bodies, though. You're better off with a cheap body and a great lens than the other way around.

I am a WAY beginner, but I get really good stuff on my iphone, make me want to go PRO!

Should I get a Canon 60D or look below?

It also helps that you're in Japan. If a few animes and ninja based video games have taught me anything it's that the moon is HUGE in Japan.

huge... in japan. *snicker*

depends what you want. Higher end cameras than 60D are roughly US $1,500 and up, unless you go with a Nikon D5200 or something like that. More focus points, but from what I've read is less clear than the 60D at ISO 1200 and above (low light shooting)

70D is out which adds more focus points, faster processor, touch screen LCD (60D isn't touch) and continuous auto-focus while shooting movies. 70D being out is causing lots of good sales popping up for the 60D so it's a really good buy if you catch a sale. I got it @ $999,95 (with the EX 18-135mm IS USM Lens kit) which is actually regular price now at many places so you can get it cheaper.

It's more than good enough for me at this point and If I wanted really great video I could simply buy a very small, very light, JVC Everio camcorder for $150 on sale. The GZ-EX210RU has 40x OPTICAL zoom, super low light goodness, built-in wifi, motion detection... Not worth the extra $500 to me to grab a 70D.

If you wanna go semi-pro and have $3,500 to spend, the Canon 5D Mark III is a beast. So is the Nikon D600 or newer D700. If you're not a lottery winner, you really don't want to see the PRO prices. I'll never even get a semi-pro model unless I see one at a garage sale or something. You'll find that you want to spend that extra money on lenses anyway (and they are not cheap!).

enjoyed the vid. I'm convinced I should get an L lens or two if I ever have money falling out of my ears, but until then he can bite me with my moon shot using a sub $200 sigma lens

Just one correction: the D600 is a whole generation newer than the D700. The replacement for the D700 is the D800 with its massive resolution and correspondingly massive price. The D600 is a replacement for the D300. It still has plenty of resolution, and has a lighter plastic body. Its biggest drawback is that all the autofocus sensors are jammed into the middle of the frame - a few in the outer areas would make it a lot more useful, particularly with super-wide lenses.
