So as I understand it, one of the things the NSA does is continually back-up *EVERYTHING* that happens when it comes to communication in the US.
They can only see the Metadata about calls but NOT review the content without approval from a FISA court.
So basically every single phone call you have made, even years ago was recorded and are being recorded and stored.
If I'm mistaken about any of that. Please enlighten me.

FISA Courts = Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (the US Federal Courts that approve secret wiretaps and court orders)
FIFA = Federation Internationale de Football Association (a/k/a the world governing body of soccer)

There is "within," and there is "into" and "out of." Trading tapes of international phone sex would require unwarranted access to the contents of the calls.

I believe they are backing up the information about communications - originating number, number called, length of call, time of call, and location of both callers. This would be a subset of the information the phone companies are storing and doesn't include the actual recorded content of calls. Recording the content of calls would require a separate warrant.
The leaker's girlfriend can sure work a pole.
