What would it take to get an actual arcade board to run?
#304575 - 02/19/13 11:27 AM

I know this is a MAME forum, but I guess here are some people who can help me with my problem. If it's off-topic, please move it to another sub forum.

If I bought an arcade board of Street Fighter II, would it be possible to get the game to run on a standard CRT TV and to use standard USB PC controllers?

I'm not a technician, so altering the board, laying cables etc., would be out of the question. I'd like to know: Are there converters that you can buy on the internet where you can take the unaltered original board, plug in a TV and gamepads and play it? Or would it take more to get an arcade board to run just like that?
Overall, how complicated is it to play an arcade game at home on the original hardware?

If you want the easiest way, you should buy a SuperGun.

Thanks for the info.
Are they all that expensive? On eBay they all cost more than $ 400.
Also, I didn't find one with USB support. Do you know where I can find more information about it?
I would need one where I can use standard PC USB gamepads and where I can configure the buttons and map them at will. (For example, I like to play "Street Fighter II", but I'm not good with those arcade sticks, so I would use a Super Nintendo-style gamepad and map the buttons accordingly, like hard punch and hard kick go to the shoulder buttons.)

Sorry to say but none will support what you want. Typically they support either neo-geo controllers or genesis controllers but not USB, let alone key combos. Genesis super guns, make sure they support 6-button controllers and make sure that they have some way to connect to the kick harness on the board.

However you might find getting/building one bespoke is going to be easier and cheaper. I made my own harness for Gauntlet Dark Legacy that uses genesis controllers. It's not petty and one button is missing but it does the job.

EDIT: And yes, they can be very expensive for no reason other than it's for arcade stuff and is a sort of niche market. I'm sure many people could help build or design one.

It's simple and pretty cheap to build your own supergun and controls. I don't know the solution for your usb controller question though. You might want a prebuilt supergun for something like that and they aren't cheap. It could be as simple as adding a certain type of card into the mix but I prefer real arcade controls so I haven't looked into it.

Are only those two supported or are these standard ports where you can also find PC gamepads for?

In this case, I have to ask: Is it possible to build something like that without cutting any wires or brazing any stuff? Can a supergun be built by just plugging separate parts together?

Any neogeo or genesis (megadrive) compatible controller will work. They are used because their design is simple, which makes it simple to connect to the JAMMA board.

Using a USB controller would be harder, but not impossible. I don't believe anybody has actually done it though.

Is there some kind of manual on the internet that shows how a supergun is built?

You clearly lack the required knowledge to understand such a manual.

Thanks for your analysis, but that wasn't my question.

But this is a mostly Do-it-Yourself thing if you dont wanna pay and it's not always so simple.
