Space Invaders clones artwork

I was just curious if the clones of space invaders use the artwork like overlays and backdrops or were they black/white?
I'm helping Circo at emumovies updating the snap videos for mame and want to make sure it is documented as it should be.

So does anybody know the correct way to display these clone games under space invaders? Should I disable the artwork? Should I apply the background? Should it have color overlays? Or are all clones suppose to be Black/White? Example is all the headon clone games should be in B/W.
