It's just a wireless controller for a PC. It's got android on it too but it's not really what you think it is. I hear the range is pretty poor too.

No, it's more than that, it can run Android apps and games locally on its quad-core A15s and GeForce GPU. Early benchmarks look like it's gonna be *the* killer device for playing modern MAME on the go, but of course pricing remains to be seen.

Now that is so cool. Play PC games and Android apps on one gaming devise. Just like having a Linux and Windows on a PC.
I do see a problem though. Can't play PC games outside of the house. Other wise you need a laptop in order get it out of the house. Who want to carry a laptop and that around?

Oh I didn't know that. Should have looked into it a bit more. That makes it a very interesting device indeed. The usual news outlets seem to be touting it as little more than a wireless controller with an LCD. I guess that's due to the current lack of software though.
Watching the presentation they expect people to have multiple consoles per household so hopefully it should be sensibly priced.

Don't these portable devices usually have a strong GPU but weak CPU? Wouldn't that be bad for MAME?

Like I've said before, MAME runs well up to and including most 16 bit games on Tegra 3 devices (Nexus 7, Ouya, presumably the MS SurfaceRT if they sell any without having it returned). That's dual Cortex-A9 cores. This is the Tegra 4 with quad Cortex-A15 cores, which in terms of instruction efficiency is something like the jump from Pentium 4 to Core 2 Duo - double the perf at the same clock isn't unheard of.

No. The *relative* jump is similar, it doesn't mean the ultimate perf is as good as a desktop C2D. We're still dealing with sub-2 GHz clocks here, after all. But it's on par with and will sometimes beat an Atom-based x86 now, which for mobile devices (a space where people are seriously buying the Pentium Pro-equivalent-power Raspberry Pi with grand plans of cabinets and MAME) is huge.

The only good thing (and the point of it, I assume) is that it lets you hold the tablet and the controls at the same time. With a gamepad, you need to have a place to put the tablet and a way to prop it up.

Anyone who isn't surrounded by an aura of smug can see that laptops will always trump handhelds, tablets and phones for power in the portable market.
Now, back to my Pentium 100 laptop with Windows 95, an 800x600 TFT screen with poor visibility from any angle, no CD-ROM drive, no USB and no ethernet or even a dial-up modem.

It's amazing you have kept that unit working and functional in this day and age considering the way a lot of people are known to treat electronics or trash a laptop because of a virus, failed HDD, or some other problem.

One of the reasons it's still alive is probably due to the fact it's never really been feasible to upgrade it! Aside from a 3.5" floppy drive, there really isn't any other way to transfer files. It does have 2 PCMCIA slots, but I don't have anything else which uses these (I do have a PCMCIA hard disk which I found a few years ago, and Windows detected it and installed without fault or even needing to use the nonexistent CD-ROM!). The main drawback with it being a base model 440CX is that the default CD-ROM drive (included in the Toshiba Satellite 440CDX) is replaced with on onboard floppy, whereas the CDX has a tray-loading CD drive and an external floppy.
The previous owner (apparently a school) apparently did use the internet on this machine many years ago, however I am not sure how this was done - it has IE3 and an early Netscape, the latter being the default browser. Most likely it probably came with a 28.8 or 33.6 modem back in the day.
It still has the original battery too, although it lasts about 2 minutes from fully charged to Windows complaining about low battery. I'm surprised it can even hold a charge to start with.

I have a 486 laptop, the battery doesn't do anything. I have a PCMCIA network card for it.

At one time, I had an ancient Winbook XP5 laptop with Windows 95. I used to have a PCMCIA ethernet adapter which allowed me to connect to my network and access the internet.

My laptop didn't have a CD-ROM drive or USB, so that was the only way to really get files onto it other than the floppy drive.
On a tangentially related note: If you install the Windows Desktop Update on Windows 95, the shell has most of the features of Windows 98, which makes it much more useable.

That sounds like my old Fujitsu, it was Pentium 100 also, the only thing I used it for was GPS, which would update a half a mile past where you were. It did have a CD-Rom which could be swapped for a battery, it did have a card for Ethernet but never tried it. I got the GPS and laptop for free. After use GPS on it a couple times, I switch the GPS to a much faster computer.
