nice work on the emulation. as a part-time Star Wars fan (since i usually get hyped up for it during Star Wars Weekends at disney), i am looking forward to seeing this one fully emulated.

Please tell me the emulation of the legendary John Williams sound is actually going into the public releases of MAME and isn't just a tease for that video...

It's in right now jonwil, SVN r19976 adds the code and hooks it up to model1.c. MPEG-1 layer 2 and Yamaha AMM decoding for now only.

You can also read the DIFF at http://git.redump.net/mame/commit/?id=c39dfefcaec4d285dee39da9b2176fb4c0c89d88

(r19978 and r19980 adds it to model2.c and model3.c for stcc and scud respectively.)

No, I totally faked that video.

Layers 1 and 2 fell out of patent in mid-2008. MP3 and MPEG4 (the ones you care about) don't until 2027.

MP3 patents expire by 2017.

Nope. Microsoft lost their suit against Fraunhofer, which extended them.

Wait. WHAT?
Can you link me to this legal case? I'm only seeing the Microsoft vs Alcatel-Lucent case which was over the patents which expire in 2017.

Patents last for a fixed length of time they don't extended.

Normally yes but I've heard of at least one university drug patent getting extended by a good 10 years or so by a judge after a case.
Which, might I add, is completely unfair and abuse of the system.

I can't find the reference to that I used previously, but the Wikipedia talk page has a lot of interesting info. They feel all the patents on decoding are over by August of 2015, and the 2017 ones are for encoding. Whoever's writing that is likely not a lawyer though

A commenter here agrees: the big 2 remaining in the US for decoding are:

* 5,627,938 : Expires: May 6, 2014
* 5,742,735 : Expires: April 21, 2015

It's less clear what the European situation is; given the two big companies with patents are French and German that does matter unfortunately.

Disney wants to extend Copyrights, not really patents.

Yeah copyright is the corrupted one, not patents.

There are some companies that hold copyrights over 100 years old! There should be a mandatory date to where any creation falls into the public domain.

Why? If you invent something, wouldn't you want to protect what is yours? Would it be OK with you if someone made your product stealing your profits when you did the R&D?

No, that part is fine. What's broken is that patents are granted for things that are trivial or obvious, or that have tons of prior art. They don't get overturned, because it's too expensive to litigate, and they eventually get bought up by patent trolls who basically use them for legalized extortion.

That's not the only thing broken with them. Patents on new drugs only last a few years so companies scramble to hype and overcharge for them to try and make their money back before they lose control. So you get overcharged. Then a few short years later a talentless dickhole can legally steal the formula.

Which flavor of MPEG is Star Wars Trilogy using? (i.e. can that be hooked up in MAME just like Star Wars Arcade was or is it using things that are still patented?)

What about the Konami games that used MPEG for their audio, do we know about those?

I don't think that's really true. Drug patents last 20 years, which is plenty long enough. Additionally, before the patent expires, they can make minor changes to the drug, like making a "time release" version, slightly changing the formula, or mixing it with a complementary drug in the same capsule and then re-patenting it.

The primary reason that drugs are so expensive in the US is because they're dirt cheap everywhere else in the world. The US is subsidizing medicine for the rest of the world.

Bullshit. They're insanely expensive in the US because you have a corporate/government cartel in place to ensure they remain expensive. The lobby groups ensure this stays in place.

MPEG in Star Wars is no longer protected by patents, the ones used in games like DDR are still protected.
