Starship 1 for the Holidays

The official release of this games artwork and shroud is on the short list
but in the meantime mine works well enough and the game benefits greatly by having it.

I strongly encourage anyone with Photoshop skills to join in and help with the project.
We have over 100 scans of game art and only a small group with limited time to do the work involved.

Sweet Trev. I wish there were more people helping too. I don't have much time. I thought work would slow down but it hasn't. I'm still chipping away at the Omega Race background. I will post an update soon. Thanks for all the time and $ you put into the project.

Hey Antny, your Omega Progress looks awesome. I think you should just hit that mirror button and move on to the other parts.

You can always come back later and touch up the background if you really want it perfect.

My source has a Atari Sky Raider coming some day soon that has my name on it some day in 2013. Otherwise there are just a couple more pieces from his collection to wrap things up.

Just as well since the wife lost her job in July so funds are tight and well, there is plenty to do.

Awesome! I've been wanting to make a new molding for Sega Mega-Tech for some time, but my efforts haven't been successful. Does anybody know a package short of learning full-blown CAD that will do these 3-D pieces? I'm hoping to find something where you can draw a line or shape on a surface and "pull" or "push" it forward or backward to create a molding.

Give Sketchup a shot:

I worked with a traditional 2d artist who had never used a 3d program before Sketchup. Seems it was easy enough to learn that she was able to model her apartment in a few days.

It's probably about as easy as you'll get, but I'm not sure if they have good tools for modeling smooth molding like on the megatech cab. See what you can do though! I'm sure there's an extrude tool in there somewhere, and beveling or filleting the edges might be an option as well.

Dude! You know I'm through on this matter.

You've got the inner 3d shroud
the outer cabinet piece,
plus a cross-hair that is attached to the monitor screen.

I cleaned up the actual cabinet with that special whitening mixture used on white plastic that has turned yellow. Came out really nice.

This is a pretty decide idea. At least to get an idea about what it should look like when viewed from a specific angle. It might not however be appropriate to then turn that viewing angle into a high resolution flat image that can be used in MAME.

There are many pro apps for that. The best that I know are Solidworks, 3dMax and Maya. I made some works where I modeled in Solidworks and than made the renders in Maya. You could do everything in just one of these apps, but I don't like Solidworks renders and I don't know how to make complex models in Maya, so I used both. Than again, I'm not an expert, I just made two jobs for a Brazilian weapons company (the payment was so ridiculous that I never came back). There is also 3d Cinema and Google Sketchup, but I don't know nothing about these. If I would restart working in this area, I would probably pick Maya from the beginning, but don't take my word, do your own research. The only problem I faced with Maya was with nurbs tessellation (I had to make dozens renders to have a perfect one without gaps), but I don't know if the problem was because I was learning (by my self with Google) while I was working (I mean, entirely my fault, which is the most probable), if it was the pirate copies we had at the company or if it was because we weren't using pro graphic cards.

EDIT:

It would be cool to see comments from some one actually working in this area. But the only one I know that frequent this forum is J. Desserts, but he was banned... maybe instead, AnimalBear can descant about the subject... it would certainly be an entertaining piece of... post.

EDIT 2:

I never used CAD, but I believe you can start working in CAD (If you are familiar with it) and than export to other app.
