Heaven forbid your run button should be the Shift Key and you'd need to access your inventory with the Tab key while fleeing something that could kill your game character. 
Not very well thought through on Steam's part.

Not very well thought out key mappings for the game if it's Steam integrated, considering that shortcut's been well-known for years now.

A lot of games pause automatically as soon as you access the overlay.
Me? I changed that key to Pause / Break.

Remap shift+tab to something else or disable Steam Overlay, IIRC you can disable it on a per game basis.

I removed the checkmark for 'Enable Steam (whatever) in game something something...'
At the moment - I can't see needing to use this so.... 
I guess it's for chatting during a game or something?  meh.

It lets you quickly get forums, support pages, stats, etc. Useful for games like TF2 when you get an obscure item drop and want to work out whether it's actually valuable.
