Pretty crazy stuff.
I've vacationed in Ambergris Caye at my friend's beach house a few times, right about at the same mile marker north of San Pedro as the reported shooting. There are not many houses up there (the Caye only being about a third of a mile wide in that area), so I'll bet I'd know which house it was by sight.
Very strange to hear about this level of weirdness in a somewhat remote place that I'm so familiar with.
My friend's house is the small one on the beach, where the pier for the Palapa Bar is anchored:
