MESS does support 7zip, but from what I heard, some 7zip created by windows 7z may not be supported. You may want to try remaking the archive with torrent7z.

BIOS and ROM's listed in the source are the only ones can be loaded in 7z.
Any others that are not listed in the source have to be in zip in order to load.
Here example.
C:\Stuff\MESS>mess64 pce Average speed: 100.00% (3 seconds)
C:\Stuff\MESS>pause Press any key to continue . . .
pce.7z loaded without a problem because it is supported.

There is indeed a problem with 7zip and -cart switch.
I just tested a.sfc a.zip a.7z (created with torrent7z)
the first two load fine while the last fails to boot (but it is apparently loaded)
Now if I add that entry to the softlist (a.sfc), then the same 7z archive a.7z is booting fine, of course I don't use the -cart switch then. So I guess there is really a problem with 7zip support and it is unrelated with windows 7z executables.
Report that properly and wait for a fix. For now use raw/zipped files if your roms are not included in the softlist, although using roms which are not included should be avoided if possible.

So basically there is no problem at all

That would be great. I can do the middle finger to the zip support when ever the 7-zip get supported.

hehe that's not exactly what I meant though
he may be using homebrew material, those are not supported by the lists, for everything else, yes, using the lists is highly recommended
