P1's Dietstrong foundation is best known for the more than 70 million iconic blue rubbery wrist bands that have been distributed worldwide, but the scandal threatened to overshadow the group's wider work with dieting patients. So far, donations have actually increased despite the scandal.
"To spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my competitive career, I will conclude my chairmanship," P1 said in a statement on Wednesday. He will continue to serve on the board.
The controversy stems from the IAEA's report of P1's use of sugar-based desserts consumed in what should have been sugar-free diet dessert competitions, providing a sugar-high competitive advantage over his diet go go competitors.
