MESS Question

It's been a long time since I've tried to use MESS. I seem to remember that there was a command that would automatically make all the software folders. I can't find anything in the new documentation. Does this command still exist?
TIA

what do you mean by "make all the software folders"?
if you mean to create suitable subfolder in roms/ for each software list, then it is cmpro which has some option to create these.
otherwise, please explain better what are you trying to

There used to be a 'switch' type command (like the MESS - createconfig command) that would create a 'software' folder with all the subfolders for all supported systems named the same as their respective bios package names.

"Software" folder is the same as a rompath. By default, software lists loading works from "software/systemname", (eg. software/a2600, software/xegs) - rompath only needs to point to wherever "software" resides.
I don't understand why you would need a bunch of empty folders without any images in them? Such a folder creation could be easily made by parsing the "softwarelist name" line in an .xml for the folder name...

Like I said, it's been a while since I've used MESS, and it was just the way I remember setting it up in the past.

I also remember that feature. I don't think it exists anymore.

yeah. software folders have been removed at least 4 years ago (and in the final period they were only used by MESSUI not from command line)
Now you - either load any file by specifying its full path (both from command line, from the File Manager in the Internal menu and in frontends)
Quote:
mess nes -cart "C:\My\NES\game\folder\super mario bros.nes"
- or you use software lists, store the files in roms\nes\ and launch
Quote:
mess nes -cart smb
(in this latter case the "nes" name of the folder corresponds to the nes.xml software lists, so that e.g. Sharp X1 games will be split in roms\x1_cass\ and roms\x1_flop\ since X1 emulation supports two separate software lists)
Feel free to ask any more questions

"mess nes smb" works too

true, but that only works from softlists...
since the user seemed willing to learn how to load both ways (lists and non-lists), the media switch option might be easier to learn given that it provides a unified approach
