How can I switch versions of MAME without losing my settings?

This is probably somewhere in an FAQ but I couldn't find it, so please forgive. I'd like to switch to the version of MAME offered by the "Unofficial Highscore.dat" page so I can keep my high scores. But if I do that, do I need to do something special so I don't lose all the work I've done configuring game input settings, video settings, etc.?

It depends on how much older the other version is.
But why even ask? It's not like you can't copy your files to a new folder and see what happens when you load up the other MAME executable.
