Want new grass to grow? Just perfected the method.
#292785 - 07/29/12 06:14 PM Attachment: 2012-07-19_18-18-46_367.jpg 1867 KB (0 downloads)

Had to re grade the last of my back yard. I was trying to get grass present for a party the following weekend. Sod hasn't been available for weeks due to the heat, had no choice but to plant. I needed the grass to grow quick, so I went shopping for options.

I saw these recycled paper "grass mats". They roll out on top of the area you are planting grass, and are supposed to help grass grow by keeping the seeds moist. I figured they weren't too expensive and worth a shot. Just for curiosities sake I wanted to see what the results would be with and without the mats.

I laid down a thin coat of compost manure and peat moss across the entire area to be planted. I threw down fresh seed, generic label (traditionally I use Scott's water-smart, but this was a large area and that stuff is pricey). I rolled out the mats right over the seed. In the area where I did not lay down a mat, I lightly raked the seed under the dirt.

The results below are after SEVEN days. It was 90F+ each of the seven days. I watered every other day.

The area ~with~ a mat below. SEVEN DAYS:

How much were those mats? I needed to do a few small areas so I ended up using that Scotts patch stuff which is basically the same idea as those mats. The Scotts patchmaster is just seed, fertilizer and recycled newspaper which not only keeps the seed moist it also prevents runoff.

Did a nice job though!

The mats varied in price. I picked up three 400 sqft rolls for 6.99 each, and two large bags of generic seed. Overall it was still cheaper this way than if I had gone with the expensive seed and no mat.

Grass? WTF is grass? Ours is competely brown. I'm getting ready to plant cactus (plural: cacti, cactuses, or cactus).

Your sans-mat area looks like my attempt at seeding a yard. Between birds, kids, and nature in general, I ended up with nothing that year. The mats you used were a bargain in many ways.

So, does the grass grow *through* the mat, or did you have to remove the mat once it started growing?

I've seen people seed and then cover it with straw (or hay, I don't know the difference). I think they eventually rake up the hay once the grass is established but I'm not sure.

Grass comes up right through. Grass had trouble in areas I overlapped the mat, but breaking it apart with your foot solves that. Makes the area look a bit nicer than dirt for the week too...

Do you internally compost as well?

It's an external excretion that makes your grass grow and saves you money.
