Hi, I'm sorry to bother you, but I'm trying to figure out some things about all this MAME universe...
So far I've been invastigating quite a lot about MAME and its history. I've learned about the original MAME, the licence, the reason why Kaillera is so unpopular, and I'm about to give mamehub a try.
But still in all this, it confuses me a little the popularity of some builds. I understand MameUI because of its graphical interphase, but that's something that Mame Plus have too.
I can see that those are the two most popular mame builds, but I still don't know exactly why.
Long story short: Aside from the graphical interphase, what other features does MameUI and Mame plus include? Also what other builds do you reccomend and why?

i use mameuifx and wont use anything else because it has more video options than normal (particularly good if you use mame and an arcade cabinet/crt monitor/old school tv), and has certain features what you wont find in regular mame builds (just little 'fixes'/tweaks here and there). it also recently has the advantage of loading VERY fast, as opposed to regular mameui which can take ages to fire up.... (make sure u get the latest build, see below:)

It's largely personal choice. MAMEUI is popular mostly because it was the first major GUI for MAME and people, like baby chicks, imprint on the first software of a category they use. There are many, many graphical interface front ends with more capability (GameEx has a ton of great features like the Xbox-style GamerTag you see some posters here using) and customizations/skins.

As a MAMEdev I of course recommend you use standard MAME with one of the many fine frontends: GameEx, QMC2, Emu Loader, and so on. I suggest you try several of the front ends and see what feels good to you.

You cannot go wrong with official command line MAME and either QMC or Hyperspin.Personally I use those 2 and highly recommmend them both.

I really don't understand all the love for the QMC frontend on these forums..
It's for masochists...because there are far more painless options out there, with just as many, if not more, features.

Then you need to start understanding..
It's by far the most feature-rich, it's cross-platform compatible, has far fewer bugs than most, it's very actively maintained, supports both MAME/MESS, supports cool features like MESS' slotted architecture, the list just goes on and on... and you won't find most of those benefits anywhere else. Just take a few minutes to learn how to use it and you'll see what I mean.

Because it's got a ton of great features, it's very actively maintained (sometimes 6 new updates in a day), and as you can infer from that last bit the author is super responsive to user requests. So if there's something about it you hate, I highly suggest talking it over with the guy.
Also, it's the only frontend that correctly supports MESS/UME and softlists at the moment.
