Questions on MAME performance

Hi. Just a few questions because I'm upgrading to a Core2Duo.
Will I get a significant improvent in performance if I compile MAME for 64 bits?
Is MAME 64 bits made for 64 bit processors or for 64 bit Oss?
Do I need to upgrade from Windows XP 32 bits to Windows XP 64 bits to benefit from the extra performance?
Have you compared the performance of Cave Hitachi SH3 games with 32 bit and 64 bit? Those are the games that I'm worried about in terms of performance.

Yes about 25% faster than 32bit > > Is MAME 64 bits made for 64 bit processors or for 64 bit Oss?
Huh??

WinXP 64bit???...are you serious, terribly supported OS, get Windows 7, and yes you do have to have a 64bit OS to benefit from a 64bit compile of MAME.

Those Cave games are no longer supported in MAME due to a take-down request by CAVE, so don't ask about them here, you'll get your wrists slapped.

Depends on the game but yes, in some cases the improvement can be significant (particularly for complex 3D systems such as Model 3, N64 and Seattle/Vegas)
> Is MAME 64 bits made for 64 bit processors or for 64 bit Oss?
Both. > Do I need to upgrade from Windows XP 32 bits to Windows XP 64 bits to benefit from > the extra performance?
You must upgrade; 64-bit applications won't run on a 32-bit OS.

You needn't worry; we don't support those games anyway

Absolutely. you will go much faster with a core2duo I have an E8500 in my home and office PC that have been great for many years. It does need to be overclocked to make seattle games run smoothly.
However, that chip was finally eclipsed by the i7-2600
Seattle Games now run smoothly without overclocking. If you can afford it, you owe to yourself to get this chip or faster.
Also, go Windows7 64bit. It's time to move on.
Finally SSD drives. Mame launches much faster from an SSD. Of course storage room is a big problem.

LOL yes it certainly is > > Finally SSD drives. Mame launches much faster from an SSD. > Of course storage room is a big problem.
You know i have heard this for some time now.MAME launches in the blink of an eye on my velociraptor 15k HDD.But it also launches just as fast from my 7200 rpm drive.2 weeks ago I got a 128gb SSD drive and MAME launches no faster then the 15k drive.
Honestly OP,if money is a issue, forget the SSD and grab a 3tb 5900rpm(which will most likely be cheaper then a 128gb SSD) drive for storage of your roms.Or put the extra $$ towards a better processor.Launch MAME from whatever drive you are using as C (or your fastest current HDD)

Obviously you don't want your ROMs on an SSD, that's a waste. The best setup is to have your Windows install and programs on the SSD and data on a conventional large drive. That way bootup is super-fast and launching programs is super-fast but you still have all the cheap storage space you need.
And no, even 15k RPM drives can't compete with current-generation SSDs as a boot drive.
