Compiling MAME for DOS Redux

I've been finding myself going back to my roots: DOS. That means I've been experimenting with FreeDOS since MS-DOS 6.22 is rather limited. And I've found joy in using FreeBASIC and QB64 given my background in using QuickBASIC.
Anyway, I did a search for compiling MAME for DOS and found this rather old and sticky thread for some tools. It was sourced from the old mame.net.
My question is: Has anyone successfully compiled MAME for DOS using current compilers, DOS extenders, and source code?

the last version which compiled fine for DOS was 0.105 0.106. I think smf did some work to make the source compile also after the big video rewrite, but I don't think it has ever been released.
also I think the DOS components have never been updated in the past 3-4 years, so good luck trying to port all the necessary OSD components needed by current MAME core to DOS
anyway, latest MAME compiles for OS/2 if you are willing to play with old OSes...
EDIT: fixed post... for some reasons I had forgotten that it's 0.106 the last version pre-video rewrite thanks krick for posting the sources...

I have the DOS MAME source for 0.106 (attached), but I'm not sure what else you need to compile it.
