z26 emulator running slow
#291062 - 07/06/12 05:59 PM

z26 runs very slow on my computer. So slow that it's unplayable. There's something wrong because obviously it should be running at full speed. Also, everytime I quit a game, an error message is displayed saying "z26 has encountered a problem and needs to close..."

Can you help me?

(I am using the x26 front end. Windows XP 32-bit)

Thanks

I think this is not the place to ask about this emulator. You should ask z26 developer

his e-mail: [email protected]

try deleting config files and setup the emulator again (clean install).

I already did that but had no luck.

Hi.

Did you also delete the .cli file in the main directory? The .cli file sets the video mode and controller option. If you delete all files (except for the ROMs) and start over, we can then rule out the emulator as the problem. I honestly don't think it's the emulator as I use it all of the time and I don't think I've ever had an issue with it.

Try updating your video drivers as well. Has other software been installed that may be causing this?

Also, has the emulator run at full speed before?

The z26 emulator has never run at full speed for me. I've deleted all those files and it still doesn't fix it. My video drivers are all up to date. No other software has been installed that may be causing this.

The only thing I can think of is during the installation process, when all the files are installing, I got a message saying that one of the files that is trying to download to the Windows directory (or system32 directory, I forgot which one)... that the file already exists and that file is newer, and it is recommending that you keep the newer file and not replace it with an older version of the file. So I did what was recommended and didn't let that old version of that file download.

Forgot to ask ... What are your computer specs (Operating System, CPU, RAM) Probably not a factor but if it's never run at full speed, not sure what else at this point. Sounds like you got the basics covered.

You might want to play around with the settings. Download the latest version and tinker with the sound and video settings. Perhaps a setting or two will produce better results.

Also, have you considered trying Stella? z26 is no longer active (at least not recently), whereas Stella is updated frequently. I prefer z26 myslf due to z26 supporting more controller types but Stella is a very close second.

Yeah, I use Stella as my main Atari 2600 emulator. It's amazing. But yesterday, Bekki brought up the z26 emulator and I remembered that I tried it once but the speed was messed up on my computer. Even though I know Stella is better, I like to have alternatives. So I decided to give z26 a shot again. But again, the speed was at a crawl. And yes, I have the latest version downloaded of z26 and x26 (z26 frontend) and I downloaded them from their official websites. I tried tinkering with it's video and audio settings, but still no luck.

My computer specs are P4 Win XP 32-bit.

Something doesn't sound right. Z26 doesn't use an installer - it's just a zip archive with the Z26 executable, SDL.dll, and some text files... You extract them to a folder and that's it. Are you sure you're downloading it from the official website?

The x26 frontend uses an installer.

Try using z26 directly, without x26 front end. See if that helps any.

Also, while z26 is running, start task manager and see if some program is running that might be causing it to slow down (active virus scan, any auto update programs, Windows update, etc.) Try restarting your computer and make z26 the first thing you try and see if it runs slow from a fresh restart.

I honestly don't think it's the emulator as the z26 website states this:

Hardware Requirements:
A computer with reasonably fast processors, hardware support for OpenGL, and a working vsync

Sounds like you have this covered.

When I double click on the z26 exe, the black commandline screen appears and then quickly disappears.

I'm commandline illiterate.

Double-clicking z26.exe should bring you to the z26 built-in front end.

Try re-downloading it from the official site.

http://www.whimsey.com/z26/

You'll want this one:

The current release using OpenGL video for Windows, Linux and the Macintosh is version 3.02.

Download the Windows executable.

My bad, I was thinking of a different emulator in regards to the commandline screen appearing and disappearing.

Okay, so I opened the z26 exe and the built-in GUI loads fine. But when I try to play a game, there is the same slow down that occurs.

This is the weirdest thing because I've never had problems with any other emulator, program, software, etc. before.

z26 should be running at full speed on your system.

I had a Pentium 4 single core 3.0GHz, 1GB of RAM and GeForce 7600GS 256MB and 1920x1080 resolution (WinXP Pro SP3). z26 was never slow.

do you have a GeForce or a Radeon video card ?

Most emulators on VERY slow on Radeon vidcards if using OpenGL video mode... sadly.

I have a 128 MB, ATI Radeon X300 Series. I don't think z26's default setting is to use Open GL though. So I don't think that would be the cause of it.

from the readme:

Quote:

Hardware Requirements
A computer with reasonably fast processors, hardware support for OpenGL, and a working vsync. Note that vsync is most likely to work properly if z26 is run full screen.

so, z26 runs requires OpenGL.

I just tested z26 this morning on my dad's laptop and z26 runs like CRAP (Radeon video card). Lag like there's no tomorrow. Stella also lag.

laptop specs: Core I7 3.2GHz, 8GB RAM, Radeon HD 6770 1GB.

I works fine on my desktop Core I7 2600 with a GeForce GTX 570 videocard.

so, emulators running on OpenGL do not have a good performance with Radeon video cards.

Thanks for testing it out.

But as for Stella, it runs absolutely fine on my computer. It runs with ease with plenty to spare.
