TrevEB & Mr. Do inspired me with some kind words. Here we go. I will work on the background over the weekend.
*Edit* I didn't realize Omega Race even had a cockpit version. I never saw one in person.

Sorry it's taking so long. This puppy has a lot of detail. The good thing is I only need to complete one half. The other half is a mirror image. Here's a sneek peek of what's comin'

Here's what I got so far. I was disappointed when I looked closer and it appears it's not a mirrored image. I originally thought I could finish the right half then copy and flip it to make the other side....not the case. Work has been hectic, so I will keep chipping away at it.

I'd like to disagree.
Far as I can tell, it is mirrored left to right. The only difference is that the left looks slightly cutoff, if that's what your noticing.
If I cut the thing in half, then flip the left hand side and place it over the right, then 50% transparency, it's a perfect match, other than slight warping that may be there simply due to the age of the artwork.
It's a mirror image... have it (as time allows).

Hmmm maybe your right. I thought I saw subtle differences in the two sides other than the cut off (which I didn't initially notice). I hope your right and I'm wrong.
If that's the case, I'm a lot closer than I thought.
Any chance you can put "Astro Invader" at the top of your list for stitching? One of my favorites back in the day. I would love to start it next. No rush, whenever.

Yup, I think it's going to be hard to see the gameplay over this background. I guess it was ok with a vector monitor.

Mr Do - I haven't checked the FTP lately. If Astro Invaders isn't uploaded yet can you get it on the FTP some time soon? One of my favorites.
Anyhow, here it is..........to be continued

If you're talking about Stern's Astro Invader, I had spent an unfathomably long time cleaning it up this past summer, for a 3dArcade model I was working on at the time. Had to fill in a lot of detail that was scratched right off the bezel, but I had it almost done. I'll have to get back to it again.
Have scans been uploaded for (a) Gremlin's Space Firebird bezel, or (b) the side pieces for the bezels of either Gremlin's Astro Fighter or Moon Cresta? Same artwork but different colors, I need the pieces that attach to the side edges of the main bezel. These also will be for a set of 3dArcade models.
Edit: Didn't know there was another version. I had cleaned up the one from the "Scans need to be cleaned" folder, which was very scratched. Is there a listing of other scans recently made?

Nice.
Is this one symmetrical?
|
|
|
|
|
Yes it is to a point. I originally did think so...then I didn't....then I did. The majority of it is symmetrical. The very center isn't, as seen below. I believe the way I will do it is copy...flip...paste the side I'm doing then erase and trace what isn't. I hope I made sense. I know it looks like I'm close to having the one side finished but there is still a ton of detaild to do. I have a little time to work on it though.

Yes, Stern's Astro Invader. I don't want to go over your hard work. If you want to finish it for the artwork project (sounds like you were close) that would be great.
BTW if anyone has access to the real machine please let me know.

are you sure the backdrop scan is not cropped ?
for me the lack of symetry is mostly due to "printing" failure does the orginal errors should or sould'nt be corrected is a debate

Ah... now I see what you're talking about. Thanks for looking at it at that great a detail =D
As zorg said, at this point, it's a judgement call; this could be a printing error. For example, on the right, where the one part is blacked out, that looks like that it was just scratched out from age.
As you go farther down the center, it looks like something didn't line up during the final printing process, and that's why things are off.
If we had three to four copies of the backdrop, and they were all like that, then it'd be easy to say "leave it like that, because that's how they were all printed."
But since we only have the one, we need to decide: one-off mistake, or not?
On stuff like that, I tend to "fix" it.

Me too....
I will eventually finish it and I'll "mirror" what I have and ovelay it. Then I'll see what I've got.
Tracing/cleaning up stuff is always subjective. A lot of things get "lost" when they are shrunk for MAME anyway....although I do try to get as accurate as possible. Besides who says they couldn't be improved in the future If another sample shows up? It happens with Mame drivers all the time
Fixing it would be much easier
|
|
|
|
|
Ok, found some time to put into this. I pieced it together quick and dirty. I still have more to do but it's getting close. I didn't realize the amount of detail in this sucker.

It's finished. It's waiting for Mr Do to do his magic
As far as what's next. I just posted a WIP today
http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/sho...part=1&vc=1
After that, I'm open to suggestions. I will look at the ones you named to see if it's within my capabilities. I'm honestly not sure yet. Any more scans in the pipeline?
I wish there were more people helping with the clean ups. So many great artwork scans that need love. Thanks for all u do Trev.
Edit-I have always been a big Gregf fan. I would love to do Clowns for him. It just has soooo much detail. Maybe I'll start a couple of 'em.

Yep....quite a few bezels just waiting for attention.
>Edit-I have always been a big Gregf fan. I would love to do Clowns for him. It just has >soooo much detail. Maybe I'll start a couple of 'em.
Heh. I can understand why some of the bezel pieces scare away folks wanting to work on them. Clowns or Gremlin Safari bezels demand loads of time to restore them. I can understand why those two bezels might be waiting for a while.
It's a bummer regarding Midway Clowns artwork because I have clean instruction cards waiting to be scanned and used with Clowns bezel. I tried scanning them, but the card scans don't look decent enough to be useable. The instruction card sets I have should be in better shape than these in the auction. They just need someone with a better scanner for scanning them.

I'm probably going to start it (Clowns) after Astro Invaders, along with another (if I juggle two it helps prevent burn out).
After looking at it a little more it is has about as much details as others I've done in the past. Actually, this backdrop (Omega Race) was probably the most detailed I've done.
I'm going to take "Clowns" off of the FTP and check it out soon.

My friend recently purchased Sky Raider and Atari Destroyer ( the sisters of Starship One ). I'm excited to take sky raider apart and get that art plus the correct tint of brown for the overlay.
Otherwise, Tank Battalion and ToraTora. Two tough as hell bezels to remove.
A unique PAC man clone. I think that's a wrap.
