Figures that you'd think their most hateful song is the best work they've done.

I always thought the song was supposed to be hypocritical. Anyone who believes in the actual words Axl is singing is exactly whom the song is making fun of.

You mean that the song is sarcastic? I really don't know, English isn't my native language, so I probably don't understand its nuances. From what I understand from it, he is playing the role (if the song is really sarcastic) of a racist dumbass. If the song isn't sarcastic, then he is a racist dumbass. To reach a conclusion, I'd have to read all his lyrics, and yet, I could be in doubt. Racism is a very sensible theme, so making sarcastic comments, lyrics, poetry, etc, probably isn't a bright thing. Who knows, Guns was so big back than, that it seamed obvious that he was being sarcastic... but picking this song alone without prior knowledge, certainly makes he look bad.

Yeah, I guess that's what I meant. He's singing the song from the perspective of an entitled, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, southern dwelling American. The singer hates everyone not like him but it is actually HIM that is disgusting and awful.
"One in a million" in most cases means that person is special....in this instance, he's just one out of a million more just like him.
I doubt it was Axl's personal feelings, but instead he was making a statement. Actually, Welcome To The Jungle had a similar theme of basically a small town boy coming to the big city and he's having problems adjusting to things he's never seen/experienced before and ultimately ends up corrupting him.
One in a Million controversial? Maybe just because of a couple of words in the song, but anyone focusing on those words is missing the bigger picture, or meaning of the song.
