DirectInput not initialized error

When I try to run error I get a popup error stating “DirectInput not initialized”. I have tried a few different release version as well as different build of MAME and they all give me the same error. I am running Windows 7 64bit with all my drivers up to date. Does anyone have an idea what the issue could be?

You must download and install DirectX 9, it's not included on Vista and 7.

I opened up the MAME.ini file and checked under DIRECT3D-SPECIFIC OPTIONS, d3dversion was already set to 9. I installed the latest DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer I could find which was April 2011 however, it said I already have the latest version and wouldn't make any changes to my system.

do you have joysticks or controllers in USB port or gameport ? try removing them before starting MAME.
it might also be a gamepad/joystick driver in Windows that's causing the error.

Unplugging all my gamepads did nothing. I have a Nintendo 64 Adaptoid and 3 Xbox 360 pads connected to my computer. The Adaptoid doesn't use any drivers so could it be the drivers for the Xbox 360 pads?

Maybe. You could try to uninstall the 360 drivers and test it. if it's not it, I'm sure it's easy to install it again.
do you run any PC games with that computer ? do they work ?

I uninstalled the 360 pad software and unplugged wireless receiver for the pads. No change in MAME. I have tried a number of different versions of MAME as well as a few different builds. All my other PC games and emulators that support gamepad are having no problems.

that's strange since PC Games do not have problems. did you do a clean MAME install ? delete "mame.ini" and all files in the "cfg" folder.
I don't know what else to check for.

Well it was the MAMEINFO.dat file that was the culprit. I downloaded the latest version to replace whatever version it was I had and now all it working. Thanks for your time.
