Are there any specific "clones" or "bootlegs" of a game you like?
#284937 - 05/04/12 09:16 PM

For instance I'm hooked on Crzy Kong Orca, and I like the "fast" Ms. Pac Man / Galaga 20th Anniversary edition.

I'm sure some Street Fighter fans have a specific variation of the game.

I like the "Ultimate" Mortal Kombat 3 version as well.

Stratovox clone of speak & rescue. I like this one because the sound works.

A lot of Konami games have substantial gameplay differences between the "world" and Japan versions, with Xexex being perhaps the most extreme example. Almost invariably, the World version is a blatantly unfair coin-muncher and the Japan version is much more interesting to play.

Was that true about Gradius III as well or was that only the arcade vs SNES versions?

5 examples about "clones" come to my mind :

- smooncrs : "Super Moon Cresta" is harder than "Moon Cresta" and is IMO more interesting than "Moon Cresta"
- arkatour : "Tournament Arkanoid" has some tough levels which are worth the challenge
- maglordh : the "home" version of "Magician Lord" is more complete than the "arcade" version
- mcatadvj : the Japanese version of "Magical Cat Adventure" is more fun than the World / US version
- maniacsp : the prototype version of "Maniac Square" is really much entertaining than the "final" version

And I don't speak about games where the main set is the Japanese version while "clones" exist in English language, nor about the working bootlegs when the "parent" is not working mostly because protection isn't (fully) understood or simulated ...

Now I wish someone could find and dump the Atari "Tetris" bootleg with the "Happy Birthday to You" theme instead of the default musics because it has also some funny "features" with random blocks and extra lines ...

I forgot that, I like that game. I wish there were a "legal" version for the 3DS or PSP.

IIRC the Japanese version had a beginner mode and in all other regions the intro was cut (probably since it was the first game to have the Gradius title outside of Japan, even though it was inexplicably called Gradius 3).

two which come to mind are:

choplifter bootleg: it boots up right away whereas the other versions you have to wait ages for them to start up...

wonderboy monsterland bootleg: it's the only version in english

Also, there are a couple of significant game play differences between the Japan and overseas versions:

1) The Bubble Level (2nd level) in the Japan version has more bubbles in it than the non-Japanese versions, which makes that level noticeably harder than the non-Japan versions.

2) In the non-Japanese versions, if you die, you only lose some of your options and not all of them. You re-start at that level with either 1 or 2 options. I don't exactly remember how many.

Ultimate MK3 wasnt a clone or bootleg. It was a update that Midway pretty much had to make after the flak they caught from leaving Scorpion out of MK3,and for including the elder SubZero, the one without the mask.

Two others not mentioned yet:

* Great 1000 Miles Rally Evolution Model (GTMREV) contains lots of extra graphical features, lightning and storms, sparks and fire coming from under cars, wheel standing cars (at race start), etc.

* And, how could anyone forget the Asian version of Vendetta - guys in leather and dobermans attack by humping you (and each other). It's hilarious.

Im not sure if you call it a bootleg but Ive been searching for what seems to be a rare Pole Position 2 with A and W Rootbeer ads as signs. I seen this at my local arcade 30 years ago.If anybody seen or came across this Revision or board tell me what its called please.

I’m convinced Mario is a hobo.
He wakes up everyday in the same clothes, runs around in sewers, and collects coins for a living.
At the end of the day, he uses the coins to buy mushrooms

Yeah, Asian Vendetta is a cult classic for pretty much that reason
