Stopped at an ATM drive-thru to get some cash and saw hideous blue, pink and yellow in the pizza place next door. MS PAC-MAN! Turns out it was the Anniversary machine. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers.
Ordered dinner and ate, then put in my quarters(sigh) and started a game of Galaga. On my very first credit I got farther into the game than ever. Either the Anniversary machines are easier or the stars were aligned, something... Anyway when I finally lost I just stood there grinning at the screen like an idiot. Kid walked up and said, "I don't know if I should congratulate you or charge you for a new button. But you gotta go now, sorry. We closed about ten minutes ago."
Nice, I recently set a Galaga personal best at home on MAME. They have an Anniversary machine at a local pizza joint here, I don't recall the difficulty being significantly different from the original, unless maybe the fast shoot hack option was on. Galaga is funny, sometimes I struggle to get past level 10, and sometimes everything just flows smoothly. I'm never sure if it's the game or me.

Haha, in the zone. You're probably lucky the guy didn't whack you with a pizza peel and dump you outside the door. I remember in my days working retail, we locked the doors at closing time, but we had to wait until everyone left to actually close, and we weren't allowed to hustle anyone out the door. We would just stand behind the counter and glare at anyone who took more than a few minutes.
It's always good to see people playing these old games.
Here are some scores I've gotten: Dual Ships: Galaga (normal fire) 2,975,790 (3+17 men/normal/20k, 60k, every 60k/Stage 237) (Hit/Miss Ratio 84%) [Class Of 1981] [R24/Oaks] 9/15/11 (V1.02) Galaga (fast fire) 8,911,260 (3+17 men/normal/20k, 60k, every 60k/Played All 256 Stages Twice + 141) [Class Of 1981] [KOP16/King Of Prussia] 4/18/12 (V1.01)
No Dual Ships: Galaga (normal fire) 1,002,870 (3+15 men/normal/20k, 70k, every 70k) [Confetti Arcade] 10/15/11 Galaga (fast fire) 4,548,670 (3+17 men/normal/20k, 60k, every 60k/Played All 256 Stages + 129) [Class Of 1981] [amc8-t] 2/5/11 (V1.02)
I suck at Galaga, if I get over 150,000 on the "standard" edition, that's a good game, or 350,000 on the "fast" version.
I guess Gaplus on the Wii is a bit too easy as I've scored over 400,000 on it, and I reek on it in MAME. I have well over 10 hours logged into Gaplus on the Wii! Best $6 I spent.
I got so good at "Timber" that the Aladdin's Castle put a "Kill" switch in to reset the game after I played it for "X" minutes. My personal best was 4 hours / 2,040,xxx points, as I quit after being told either I quit and had supper with the family or finished the game while they ate supper.

It seems more likely that the game was just prone to resetting periodically. It's a pretty common fault. In the documentary High Score, it happens repeatedly to the guy going for a Missile Command record. I think at one point he was like 12 hours in when the machine decided to reset. I would have lost my mind at that point.

From the sound of it, the movie theater. UA King Of Prussia Stadium 16.

HEH. Awesome. And, yeah, I often get my best scores via impromptu sessions.
Consider it high comedy....sincere tragedy....whatever...don't take it personally.
Quote: Paying money in a public place is how coin-op games should be played! It's definitely more exciting.
Put yer money down and prove yer skillz! No save states. No continues. It's as fun as Texas Hold'em but much more affordable. Well, I think poker is fun. :-)
Besides, I have access to a cabaret Pac-Man machine, along with several Megatouch machines. And they're not at a tavern either but a little family restaurant near Saxonburg, PA. ;-)

I find playing the games at all exciting. In fact, I often prefer my home rig, because it has all the controls (brands) I like, set the way I like.
I was playing Robotron some place tonight, and while it was cool playing a real machine, I hate standing (all my rigs/machines are sit-down - NO, not cocktails, I hate those, too), and I hate leaf switch sticks.
