Do you have cheat.zip in the root of your MAME path? (same location as mame.exe or mame64.exe)

Yes. I uploaded the dir listing and my mame.ini for you to look at.
I guess you can only upload one file per message. See next message for my MAME.INI file

> My MAME.INI
Edit mame.ini
Change the line: "cheatpath ." to read "cheatpath cheat"
Then save .ini file. Should work fine.

SUCCESS!! I think I know what happened....I saw "# CORE SEARCH [uPATH OPTIONS and I thought I had to create a "cheat" directory (or folder). Like I said earlier, I felt (and still feel) like a moron. Tafoid, Thanks for your help and not making me feel worse!

Well, the technicality of it is that CHEAT.ZIP is the same as having a CHEAT folder inside of your MAME folder with all of the .xml files extracted into that folder. All archives in MAME are handled in this same way, for artwork, samples and even roms - each .zip or .7z is considered by MAME as a folder.

I didn't know that. Good info to know. Does the A key still work within the cheat engine? I just tried it and it won't let me add a cheat. I know I have the cheat file, but I want to try and find a cheat on my own

The newer MAME versions do not have any in-menu cheat search facility, nor any key binding or pre-enabling of cheats. You can start a game with the built-in debugger (command line: -debug) and use that. Pugsy put up an example video of how to use the debugger to find cheats, which you can view here:

No key binding? Does that mean you can't set a key to turn on/off a cheat?
