So it appears that the TV show pirates have collectively decided (as of Feb 22 2012) that everything has to be encoded using H.264 now...

I have a Pioneer DV-410V-K DVD player that will play video files off of a USB thumb drive, but it can't handle H.264.
So basically, I need to take H.264 encoded MP4 video files and re-encode them to 624x352 AVI files using XviD so my DVD player doesn't choke.
Can anyone suggest a free (or low-cost) tool chain to do this?

FFMPEG seems to be able to convert anything. It is a command line tool but I think there are GUIs available.
