I don't like the game that much but the music is majestic and awesome and definitely a contender for best use/programming of the YM-2151. IIRC There's a DAC in there and some custom Namco job too but it's clearly the 2151 pulling the load here, check it out:
If you mean the whole scores, Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu Black Label, Rastan and Ghosts n Goblins come to mind. As for "theme" song, I can't even think of another game besides KI that has one. Well, Splatterhouse. I like Splatterhouse's more than KI's.
I like the Shinobi stage 3 music so much that I made my own version of it. The YM2151 is playing in the background, i just dubbed everything over it. Funk!!
(it'll loop with no gap in Winamp...why is it that only Winamp can loop MP3s with no gap)

Raiden's soundtrack by Akira Sato is awesome Ghouls'n'Ghosts music is absolutely great Sunset Riders has its moments (e.g. Draw Your Gun on second boss) King of Fighters 2000 has a few good tracks (e.g. Will, and Cat Tail)
Thanks for the info, I will play this game next time I update mame sets. Other favorites themes is Re????de try to guess yourself I recomend this game. I never played it on arcade but I've played in Spectrum.
I must have a very different taste in music, certainly when it comes to the Gradius III tracks. My 2 favs from that are Sand Storm and Cosmo Plant. But that game has a lot of good tracks!
My favorite (it's not really playable in MAME), but since it's port to the Sega Saturn is so close the arcade version... I know this might not have the 'chippiness' quality like the (true) arcade version would, but this has to be my favorite track.
eta: Off-Topic. I might as well mention... I had asked a long while back in the bin about an animation program or something about animating a large picture. I had taken snaps from Virtua Fighter of Dural's stage, cleaned them all up of character graphics, and stat graphics such as the life-bar, wins, timer, etc. When I was done I had a panoramic pic of that stage. I wanted to animate it so that it scrolled by slowly, Pretty much showing the whole stage background. I wanted to put this into a video and have it last around ...maybe 4 minutes. The other minute would be the Title screen, and a graphic of Dural. The different pics would fade into the next at certain times, but for the duration of the vid (while the music was playing) you'd get to watch this skyline scrolling by.
Italie had offered to do this (or to help me with it), but I felt it was a LOT of work for what I was wanting.
Easily my favourite is the arrangement of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor from Konami's Gyruss. It's heavily based on the version done by the band Sky.
Something about the combination of this music and the gameplay still gets me intensely into the game, especially at the higher levels. I can literally walk away from a session of playing it sweating and shaking from the working.
As equal runners-up, I'd have to go with the version of Pengo that uses an arrangement of 'Popcorn' for the gameplay music; tied with that is the first stage of R-Type. Other levels in that game also have good music, but this one really works for me.

I guess now we know there is precedent in Konami land for using classical music in their games pre-Parodius.
Speaking of favorite tracks, Fatty Glutton's theme [Level 3 boss] from Darius is pretty good too.

I recomend this game. I never played it on arcade but I've played in Spectrum.
