Shortest MAME update ever?

Can someone explain the compression option for chdman?
--compression, -c : which compression codecs to use (up to 4)
I notice when a chd is being copied, I see... Compression: lzma (LZMA), zlib (Deflate), huff (Huffman), flac (FLAC) listed. Is the best compressor automatically picked by chdman? Is each hunk compressed by each codec and the smallest size is what is used in the chd file?

well, that's the main reason to have multiple codecs, isn't it? so yeah, chdman tests for each chunk the best compression and chooses it but you can manually force a specific compression for the whole CHD (or no compression, e.g. to create writable CHDs for MESS) by using the -c option

I haven't time yet to look at u2/u3 (I will have time from this evening onwards)...maybe they've changed the v5 header again....you should not start converting in the u-phase anyway
a look at mametesters page doesn't show the issue as resolved anyway...so the problem may still be in...
...from the cmpro side I will look into it..

Thanks. So it sounds like the best option for MAME is to not use an option.

That is correct since a lot of the v4 CHDs have obsolete metadata and by converting them the metadata and so the SHA1 changed. Most likely these need to get redumped as well since they are lacking data the old metadata format did not support yet.
So far only the konamigv CHDs have been updated in the source, but they are also flagged as BAD_DUMP now.
Because of the GDI and LD CHD issues and potential future compression optimizations I would not convert anything right now. Wait at least until 0.146.

I have my chds inside folders inside the roms folder. Example: roms\area51\area51.chd, area51t.chd
Is this unnecessary? Should the chd files just reside in the roms folder?
I ask because the batch file offered up in 145u1 will not look within each folder.
for %%i in (g:\chd_v4\*.chd) do %comspec% /c start /low /wait chdman copy -i %%i -o g:\CHD_v5\%%~nxi

both placements are allowed by MAME, so it's up to you where to put them.
you might want to notice that the batch file has been offered by a user, which obviously is keeping its chds in the roms folder, but for MAME both choices are absolutely the same Actually, the placement inside game subfolder is the *suggested* placement since it allows you to know which game uses e.g. cap-jjk000.chd or a00uad02.chd without the need of consulting the source... but the other is allowed too because it's faster when you are developing the emulator

Both ways work, but I recommend the folders inside the roms folder setup. And the batch file you cited did not come with MAME; it's by another user and reflects only how they prefer to organize things.

I think I'm the one that came up with that version of the batch file.
In my organization in my MAME\ROMs directory, I do keep the game directories in place and have the 1 or 2 CHD files in each subdirectory.
I could not get the *\*.CHD to work right in the .BAT file, so when I copied the files from my \MAME\ROMS directory to the \CHD_V4 directory, I copied them all into the same place to make the .BAT file work.
When I get to the point of installing the generated v5 CHD files, I'll place them all in the MAME\ROMS directory and let CLRMamePro create the other directories and move the .CHD files into place.

What did you do get it to work? I tried run and run as admin. It just won't load it. Windows 8 64-bit. Oh by the way this is a clean installed Windows 8 64-bit on another hard drive.

Got it. Thanks for explaining it. I thought I might be missing a command line trick somewhere, or organizing my Mame folders in an archaic method. Fortunately I do happen to have enough space available to run the command line as suggested.

Fresh install of Win8 x64 on primary partition. Only OS. IV/Play out of reserved directories in c:\games\mame. Remove iv-play.dat & .cfg and rebuild from linked x64 mame.exe; done.

I will delete iv-play.dat and .cfg then try again. If that doesn't work then I will move it to C.
It just told me it not an App for some reason.

IMPO, Windows 8 is crap for desktops, only good for tablets. It's an iOS/Android ripoff and a bad one at that. They say that using Windows on your tablet is more universal, but there's little, if any, apps that run on ARM that already are availible for 7 and 8.
Keep with 7 for desktops.

at the current state, the new Metro interface is a horrible nightmare. Some things are better than Win7 but the Metro interface makes it a very bad user experience.
it feels like an entire new system, one that people will spends months over months getting used to... if ever. also, many people say, as myself, the Metro interface is not for a desktop or laptop computer. the Start menu is completely GONE! ... bad mistake.

I haven't upgrade to W8 Consumer Preview, still using the Developer Preview.
If you miss the Orb (Start Menu) from W8CP, try these instructions to get the Orb back. Microsoft said they will have the Start Menu in the desktop final version, unless they changed it. I have read that Microsoft wanted more people to try Metro UI, so they turned of the Registry Hack they had in the Developer Preview.
I do agree if they remove the Start Menu totally from Win8 it will be a big mistake, it will make a lot of corporate customers really mad.

LOL,a nightmare? Really? Personally I like the metro start menu it is different, and sometimes change scares people.
Mine is customized to the programs I use frequently and it feels no different then launching programs from the start orb in W7.The apps are nice,I like being able to browse the Xbox store from my PC,and I like being able to purchase games and DLC from it.
Back to change scaring off some people I remember when I was about 15-16 when Win 98 came out and I remember being in a Circuit City and overhearing people bitching about having to upgrade from Win 95,its no different now.Every time a new Windows OS comes out there is a uproar that comes along with it. I would be surprised if the was not

Ditto. Using a mouse where touch panel is needed is just awkward, stupid and on a PC I want WINODWED apps, I hate having fullscreen apps except for games..
Oh, and they got rid of the nice games that came with the developer preview... I like the Piano and the Maze one

LOL,talk about nitpicking
Whats so awkward about using a mouse pointer to click on icons to start them? You dont use desktop icons? Same thing there, you use a mouse to click on the icon!
You guys are just like my oldest and best friend. He hates change,so much that he still uses Win XP on a late 2010 PC.

no, I just do not like the new Metro interface. Ugly and it makes my desktop computer look like a tablet. If I can set Win8 to display the old desktop, put some apps/games in the desktop and pin some apps to the task bar, I'm good.

Yes, but I want a start menu, not a damn start screen for when I want to open up mame. I only want games to be fullscreen and nothing else, especially damn menus.
