Keith Courage in Alpha Zones is a PC Engine game
#276648 - 02/20/12 03:18 PM

Keith Courage in Alpha Zones is a PC Engine game. But it's not labeled that way. I wasted my time playing this shitty game. Somebody should label this game correctly and add the "PC Engine" in parenthesis after the title of the game.

Technically, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones is the title for the US release of the game on the TurboGrafx-16 console. The original PC-Engine title was called Mashin Eiyūden Wataru (based on an Anime).

Yeah, I know, but you say it's a console game - what it is doing on the MAME list as an arcade game and mucking up my style? It is the same reason as there are NES, SNES, Genesis, SMS games in MAME .. why not rename all those too? It's not going to happen. The games, while virtually identical in most cases, are made to run on hardware which is different - in that you cannot take a Genesis/Mega Drive and plug it into a Megaplay or Mega-Tech cabinet and expect it to fit or even work.

While it is true the 'heart' this is hardware might be a PC-Engine converted to Jamma in uapce.c (United Amusements - UA), that doesn't make it a PC-Engine game. The carts are not 1/1 matches to original Hu-Cards, so you cannot use them in consoles or console cards in the arcade hardware based boards.

Now, I could understand maybe adding a signification that the game is used in that certain jamma board, but saying "(PC-Engine)" would be wrong.

This thing actually could play regular old Hu-Cards, the one this particular entry was based on.

The driver states this game was sourced from the Hu-Card, yes, but not straight up plug-in and go - it had to be patched (NOP'd region code) to be made usable in the UA hardware. Doesn't it need a proper sourcing and dump? It's labeled BAD_DUMP in this particular case.

It was based on this:

Which played Hu-Cards as-is according to the owner.

Doesn't look like a HuCard to me, in this instance.

For Keith Courage, no. But the arcade system he had could have any Hu-Card plugged in and it would work.

Maybe it was only the Japanese regioned HuCards that worked, then? It'd be nice to update the source with this data as it seemed to indicate they were not able to be used 1 for 1.

Thanks for explaining why it's not labeled that way.

The new Pacland had PC Engine in parenthesis after it's title and they both were introduced into working status MAME in the same version as each other, version 0.144u3. So since Pacland had PC Engine in parenthesis next to it, I thought that maybe someone might have forgotten to put it next to Keith Courage as well.

Also, to play Keith Courage, all you have to do is insert just one credit and you can play forever. Plus, after beating the game, the ending screen stays on the screen forever just like alot of retro console game endings do. So those two additional features were another reason why I thought PC Engine (or TG-16) was supposed to be in parenthesis after the title.

But now I know why it's not labeled that way. Thanks.
