Chaos Field CHD
#275834 - 02/12/12 05:42 PM

I've extracted the main game .bin file from a few of the Sega Naomi CHD images using CHDMAN and IsoBuster so that I could try the games on demul which is handy when a specific game doesn't run properly in MAME yet.

One such example is Chaos Field but for some reason I'm getting an error when trying to extract the disc image out from the CHD using CHDMAN -extractcd

Every other Naomi game I've done so far appears to be this big: 1.20 GB (1,291,600,800 bytes)

For some reason Chaos Field comes out this big: 1.05 GB (1,138,202,400 bytes)

Consequently IsoBuster can't find the usual data so I was just wondering if the Chaos Field CHD is corrupt or needs a fix? Or if I'm doing something wrong??! I've verified that the CHD I've got is ok using CHDMAN -verify and the SHA-1 value displayed using -info matches the correct value as well so I don't think it's just my particular CHD.

Stupid Question, you're not running low on HDD space are you? That's the simple answer, unless it's extracting and saying "Extraction complete!".

No, that's not a stupid question at all (got to make sure you've covered all the options as it's often the simple things you overlook!) but I've got loads of space. I've tried it several times using different version of CHDMAN and the size and checksum are reported correctly but it just doesn't seem to extract back out quite the same as all the other Naomi games do. Since it doesn't get past the test menu in MAME it's hard to tell if the CHD is faulty in any way. It just seems odd that it's the only game I can't extract the disc image from properly.

Here's my output from CHDMAN:

chdman - MAME Compressed Hunks of Data (CHD) manager 0.145 (Feb 5 2012)
Input file: gdl-0025.chd
Header Size: 108 bytes
File Version: 4
Flags: NO_PARENT, READ_ONLY
Compression: zlib+
Hunk Size: 9792 bytes
Total Hunks: 137289
Logical size: 1,344,333,888 bytes
SHA1: be0d88eb4f48403a2ceaa7ef588ed60b96ba93bf
Raw SHA1: 43192b594e67be287644e87522104ea129fd8281
Metadata: Tag='CHTR' Length=43
TRACK:1 TYPE:MODE1 SUBTYPE:NONE FRAMES:450.
Metadata: Tag='CHTR' Length=45
TRACK:2 TYPE:AUDIO SUBTYPE:NONE FRAMES:44550.
Metadata: Tag='CHTR' Length=46
TRACK:3 TYPE:MODE1 SUBTYPE:NONE FRAMES:504150.

chdman - MAME Compressed Hunks of Data (CHD) manager 0.145 (Feb 5 2012)
Input file: gdl-0025.chd
Output files: gdl-0025.toc and gdl-0025.bin
Extracting track 1...complete
Extracting track 2...complete
Extracting track 3...complete
Completed!

And then I'd normally create a .cue file

FILE "gdl-0025.bin" BINARY
TRACK 03 MODE1/2352
INDEX 01 10:00:00

then launch ISObuster and extract the main game.bin out. But ISObuster can't find any data and, like I said, the actual size of the extracted disc image seems small when compared with all the other Naomi games I've tried (and I've tried a fair few).

I'm not saying for certain that it's faulty but I didn't know whether there was a bug in CHDMAN or the CHD itself that's not been noticed before since it's not playable in MAME..... or whether I'm missing something really obvious!?

I cant answer that for you but im wondering why you havent just moved the chd into your demul rom folder along with its rom? If its in a zip file, unzip it. I cant see any need to use chdman

Ok, cool. I wasn't aware that demul could use CHDs so thanks for that... and for making me look a bit stupid!

That's 1/2 my query sorted but, as you said, it still doesn't explain why it would appear (to me at least!) that you can't properly extract the disc image back out from the CHD like you can with other Naomi games. I guess it's more a question for a dev or someone who can tell me where I'm going wrong or whether there is some weird anomaly with it.

I think you'll find that it's not MODE 1/2352, it's probably some other format with a smaller sector size.

I think you're right. I assumed that all Naomi GD-ROMs would follow the same set of specifications and the 20 or so I'd tried before all seemed to agree with this assumption but I guess I was wrong.

I had a look to see if Able had produced any other Sega Naomi games apart from Chaos Field and, of course, they also did Kurukuru Chameleon (kurucham / gdl-0034).

I tried my usual conversion method and got exactly the same result that I got with Chaos Field (i.e. smaller output .bin than I normally get, unable to find any data in 3rd track in IsoBuster etc).

So, it would appear that however they produced their GD-ROMs it was in a different way to most of the others. I tried changing the sector size etc but still can't find any actual files in the 3rd track in IsoBuster which is unusual but equally it doesn't mean that there's anything actually wrong.

Anyway, cool. I was just trying to understand the format a bit more I suppose and obviously the fact that I'd not been able to get Chaos Field working before didn't help!
