Mame and 360 Cpu (powerpc)
#274408 - 01/29/12 02:11 PM

Hi, I'm porting mame on 360(powerpc) using a free library (libxenon) it doesn't use any microsoft code, it's based on gcc, and doesn't require XDK or microsoft tools.

I'm having some speed issue on some drivers.

mk2 and mk3 are running really slowly (4 fps) is it caused by dcs ?

Also Sh2 and Mips cpu based games are slow (15 to 30 fps) do someone started to work on a uml backend for ppc ?

Yes, the 360's CPU and the PowerPC portion of Sony's Cell are *extremely* slow per-clock. IBM had to remove everything about the PowerPC that normally makes it fast in order to get the clock past 3 GHz (this is similar to Intel's Pentium 4 debacle, only much, much worse). Hence, for a primarily single-threaded app like MAME the 360/PS3 are only marginally faster than the 800 MHz Wii (which has all the go-fast features in place).

If they're slow and mk1 isn't, then yes DCS is likely the problem.

A PowerPC backend for the UML system isn't going to come from MAMEdev given the only PPC machine we currently support (the Power Macintosh G5) hasn't been manufactured since 2006, and its rumored that the next-gen consoles will use other architectures as well.

Out of curiosity, if OP worked on a PPC backend and it worked perfectly, would it be likely to be accepted if submitted?

Sure. I said "won't come from MAMEdev", not "won't happen" or "won't be accepted"

Actually, RB, the one next generation console announced so far (Wii U) will be using IBM's POWER architecture (a.k.a. PowerPC) similar to the POWER7 series CPUs found in the Watson supercomputer.

Wii U has the same identical G3 CPU as the Wii, there's just more than 1. Next generation it ain't, in my opinion. Judge my statement when the details come out about the other two

Unfortunately, I have to dispute your claims, RB. It has a single POWER7 CPU, according to the latest available info confirmed by Nintendo. And for your information, POWER7 does not equal G3, but a completely different family of CPUs, more powerful than that of the PowerPC G5 (which is a single-core derivative of the POWER4). In addition, the custom AMD GPU is to be based on the Radeon R700 architecture (the basis of the Radeon HD 4000 series GPUs), also according to confirmed information from Nintendo

As for the 'other two', Sony's own Kazuo Hirai has already ruled out any announcement of a new Playstation console this year and confirming the 10-year life-cycle of the PS3, and while Microsoft has yet to announce anything about the rumored 'Durango' console, their own subsidiary in France is not convinced this or any other new console will be out in 2012, and the projected Christmas 2012 release of Windows 8 certainly gives this credence.

Feel free. You have public leaks, I have the relevant devkits

Is that final silicon? Or have they pulled the same trick that the early 360 devkits did when they just stuck a couple of g5's in a box?

Or the early Wii devkits that were the same speed as the gamecube?
