The Ultimate Question: Whats the best MAME frontend?
#273566 - 01/20/12 02:05 PM

Just as the subject states. What is the best MAME frontend???
Im new to the whole MAME scene, and am looking for something that is easy to control with joystick n buttons and easy to use. i currently have mala, portable version of Mame32, and a trial version of Maximus Arcade.

is there one ultimate frontend that im missing? im running an old p3 866mhz pc, with 512mb of ram. radeon 7000 64mb tv out card.

mame32 seems to work the best (actually plays roms) but i noticed the copy i got uses an old version of mame.

Mala, i cant get working right at all (wont show proper rom list)

and maximus arcade seems like it would be nice if i could too get it setup right.

Well, seeing as how no other frontend has integrated the ability to play mame online, I'm gonna go with

No such thing. Frontends are all about your personal comfort, which means they're very personal and no single one can be crowned "the best".

Depends what you want.Hyperspin has the most eye candy, but you need a at least a dual core to run it.

If you just want something that works, and simple to setup then you cant go wrong with QMC2.

If you mean for a PC without a cabinet,I gonna say MAME Arcade 3D.It's a virtual 3D arcade you can walk around in. heres the link:

http://mameworld.info/3darcade/

Please read all the instructions on the site first if you decide to use any of these frontends. As for PC cabinet frontends, I'm not sure.

Welcome by the way!

I’m convinced Mario is a hobo.
He wakes up everyday in the same clothes, runs around in sewers, and collects coins for a living.
At the end of the day, he uses the coins to buy mushrooms

thanks for the response guys. yes looking for cabinet front end (just setting up and doing the testing outside of a cabinet)

well im looking for something that is easy to use with arcade controls, allows for other emulation, not too much eye candy(as i would like to run it on old machines)
....but i dont want it to look like windows.

if i can get the MAME emulation to work with Maxmimus (it works on my other pc, but for some reason, on this one, i just get a blank screen when it goes to load a rom)id be happy with it.

but the ones that do work (portable mame32) is just a list, and you see windows lol.

Have a look at GameEX
http://www.gameex.com/

It has Trackball support and works really great.
