This old video just popped up on YouTube a few weeks ago. Very cool. (This game is in MAME and runs but some of the graphics ROMs are missing).

Sweet. Game footage has actually been up on YouTube for a while (usually at the end of The Last Starfighter footage) but I've never before seen the city level. I'd have to check but I'm pretty sure we don't have the version shown.

Very cool. Definitely a prototype, especially in how the gameplay is basically NASCAR in sci-fi flight (i.e., all left turns), but it's amazing that they were able to do this in 1985. Thanks

Reminiscent of the scenes (e.g. 'gameplay' on the arcade machines) from the movie TRON.

Does anyone know if the missing roms even exist? I didn't realize the had a working prototype. Did they have a fully working Last Starfighter proto also?
I saw this when looking at RB's link.

It looks like someone has the source code and roms. I wonder it would be playable.

Nobody knows. They're likely lost in the midst of time along with the hardware.
There was a working prototype of The Last Starfighter. Again, the hardware is believed to be lost:

According to docs on jed margolin's site (iirc), it even had tms5220c speech samples for movie phrases and everything done before it was canned.

That's pretty much the speed of progress in computer graphics. All the money in the world got you the TRON rendering in 1981/82, it was possible in limited realtime with expensive custom hardware in 1985/86, and the PS1 could do better than that for $299 in 1995.

I assumed (and do more so now) that's what was coming from the machine in the movie. However, as I understand it, the movie footage was a mix of the game, and stuff they made and tacked on in the scene.

Actually, TRON wasn't that heavily budgeted. The Last Starfighter actually fuckin smoked it. But it was incomplete, and going to take them another 18 months (and an assload more money), and they needed it done in SIX, so they....reluctantly, it almost didn't get released.....went back and re-did all the shots.

Yeah, Atari doesn't get enough credit for I, Robot and then later STUN Runner and friends for being first to polygons by a pretty significant amount.
