I used to work with a farter. I was able to take care of it by microwaving some leftover fish and then leaving it at my desk for an hour or so while I was out. When he complained about the smell, I was able to tell him "now you know how I feel".
It didn't stop the farting entirely, but at least he knew it bothered me.
There's this heavy-set chick in our dept. who burps loudly all the time. We've gotten used to it for the most part but when a visitor drops by it gets pretty embarassing.

The thing is, it's a safe joke - the Dutch have such a strong sense of national pride that they couldn't possibly be offended
