Really? Quicktime doesn't ask me to install spyware ridden visualizations all the time, it allows me to turn off the 'this isn't your default player' stuff, and *buffering* allows *buffering* me to *buffering* pause a video *buffering* and let it f*buffering*ully load. S*buffering*o I can watc*stream lost*...

Because we aren't Apple fanboys. At one time I installed QT lite, I think it was called. It was much less intrusive than QT. I do not normally run across too many MOV files so I don't want QT installed. If I do, I can just use FFMPEG's codecs to play through WMP or just use FFMPEG to convert to a standard MPG file.

I don't install any Apple software either. I don't like the way it want's shit to run at startup, check for updates, take over file associations, etc. I know it is not just Apple that does this. Adobe and Java are just as bad if not worse.

RANT MODE ON...

I wish people who wrote software understood that just because I install it doesn't mean I need it to slow down my boot time just so you can load your software faster. Microsoft has gotten much better at limiting their stuff so they can achieve faster boot times. I wish MS would make it impossible for anything to run at startup unless you choose to do so.

...RANT MODE OFF

I know the stuff it insists on installing and running isn't actual SPYware, but still, it does it whether I want it or not.

That could cover pretty much any software you talk about. Anything with any kind of back-end type software support structure would do exactly that. Admittedly, I mainly use VLC for actual playback, but I do like QT for some things, and I really don't find it to be that intrusive.

Quicktime steals the file associations from other programs. You can't stop it from doing this. It has also fucked up entire browser installs for me for several years by forcing itself as the default player instead of letting me download music files, AS IT SHOULD.

There was an option in... Administrative Tools, I think? That let you stop programs from loading automatically on startup. It's not perfect, but at least it stops them in their tracks.

Can't say I've seen it steal file associations recently. I'll grant you that 10 years ago or so a lot of different programs did that, and RealPlayer still does, but I haven't seen QT or Itunes do it in a long time.

I'm not an Apple Fanboy (far from it actually), but I haven't had any of the intrusion problems with their windows based softwares.

Strange thing about VLC... new [Re: igamabob]
#271673 - 12/28/11 11:19 PM

I used to think that this program didn't "phone home" a lot until Christmas Day when the highway cone grabbed a santa's hat.

My main issue with quicktime is the complete take over. I don't like apps that modify my system enough so it makes the systems whole purpose into running that app "ala Nero versions passed 7"

Now see, you're just causing yourself grief. Quicktime knows that it is the best possible option on your machine. Allow it to claim whatever filetypes it likes and just go with the flow, you'll be happier.

I'm guessing Santa's hat was part of the code already, programmed to appear on the 24th.

Besides, how would it know to phone home and call specifically for a hat?

I'm pretty sure the Christmas cone is already in the code, checking system date is not phoning home. It's not like the program runs an underground service at start up. Unlike iTunes which owning an iPod or not, runs iPodService.exe without asking anyway. QuickTime does the same with qttask.exe. I'm not sure if current versions still do, but I see it a lot on my client's computers. Let's not forget the Apple Update software. I'm an advanced user so I know how to disable those annoying things, but for me the most I can avoid installing those things the better. Enough I have with Adobe software checking for updates at start up, I let that slide because unlike QuickTime, Flash Player is necessary to navigate through Internet.

Not the intention of Gatinho, but other users might stop assuming we all own Macs to look cool. On the other hand, now I know how a Linux/Mac user feels like when you slap them a WMV file on the face.

There's a program I like to check for whatever URL software loves to visit, then I can disable the software or edit the HOST file if I feel like I should do it. Google for "URL Snooper".

My own iTunes beef new [Re: BIOS-D]
#271704 - 12/29/11 02:33 PM

I actually don't have any beef with QuickTime. I haven't seen it steal any associations in a long time. Now about iTunes...

iTunes has this MobileSync folder which it imposes on you on C: drive without ever giving you the choice. So if you are juggling a lot of apps on iPad, the free space on C: really fills up quickly.

Only by digging around did I find a workaround - a symbolic link or alias that points the program to another directory.

(And the App Store sucks. They should really just open it wide to work like Firefox)

If only it was that simple to convert everyone to the free/open source programs "without the BS". VirtualDub and Media Player Classic have been my main video editing/viewing programs for years.

Imagine how much faster YouTube would be without every second video having pointless 30 second text intro/outros done in shitty old Windows Movie Maker, then compressed to death by the WMV 'quality' so everything is blurred or pixelated beyond watchable. Speaking of YouTube, it's time for everyone to gather up their old digital video/phone equipment that can't handle what they're designed for, and nuke them in a microwave (or via a MOT), while recording it in lag-free HD. Death to 240p/8fps! It's got to be embarrassing that a 1980s camcorder can do better quality on analog tape than most 2000s camcorder-on-a-chip devices (e.g. digital 'still' cameras, phones and Apple devices under the 'i' label).

Not the Library. iTunes does let you select the location of your media library. I'm talking about the cache for backup data from your iOS mobile device... The Apple user forums have a number of discussions on this very topic.

With that you only stop start up programs. However some nasty programs believe themselves firewall/antivirus and also run services automatically. That's when you go to Administrative Tools or type "services.msc" on Command Prompt. There you can either disable or enable manually/automatically some unwanted programs running in the background.

Sure, you can do that also with msconfig. But you get more control about what to start and what not this way.

It's been a long time since I played with new sysinternal tools. Thanks for the tip.
