Has anyone ever beaten every arcade game in MAME?
#270905 - 12/14/11 12:32 PM

Has anyone ever beaten every arcade game in MAME? Except for the mechanical, fruit, casino, and mahjong games. Those games/genres don't count. As for bootlegs and clones, those can be discounted as well.

I am only interested and curious if anyone has ever beaten every driving, shmup, platform, shooter, sports, fighting, maze, puzzle, etc. game that are emulated in MAME?

Alot of older games are endless and continually repeat. So how can you beat those games? I consider those games beat when the game starts to repeat. For example, if a particular game has "Levels: 4 (endless)" then I consider that game beat after you complete the 4th level.

I have already beat more than 400 games and I hope to achieve this feat of beating every arcade game that MAME emulates.

If anyone has time to beat every game in MAME, they have no life.

I can think of one game that must be virtually impossible to finish. There may be many many more... But the last stages of Marvel Land are quite, if not nearly impossible for any mere human to complete.

I can't even say if that game is fully and correctly emulated. ..And that could be the reason why it's so difficult. Something's messed up, maybe.

This is off-topic, but your question brought it back to my mind. Used to be, when I was a teenager, there'd be times, maybe once or twice a year, when I'd play all the console games I had continuously, till I beat each one. Then I started getting more and more games. Then those gaming marathons didn't seem as much fun. They were more like work.

eta: I know I didn't answer your question. It seems a bit silly to me anyway. But the point is; I don't think it's possible to beat every game emulated by MAME. Unless they use cheats or change the difficulty level, and I'd presume you'd expect that all these games be set to their default settings, not using cheats, but perhaps exploit strategies for points or gaining extra lives.

Meh.

Do they repeat, but speed up? The goal with a lot of these was "play until you die and have to insert coins" so keep playing these after you "beat" them, until you die.

Try to do it on as few coins as possible.

Careful with how you formulate this question. I've run into some trouble talking about "beating games".

For a lot of old timers, (atari era and stuff), "beating" a game or getting the "ending" meant to reach the absolute last stage available in the game (level 99 or even 255) or maybe even crashing the game. For a lot of those guys, getting the ending sequence (if it even had one) did not meant you "beat" the game.

The correct question should be "has anyone ever gotten the ending story sequence to every arcade game" or something like that.

The answer is no, I doubt someone could unless that's all they did all day and if you are actually attempting that, I'll be very disappointed.

The closest you are going to get are combined efforts such as VGM or MamEnd.

What is best in life?

To crush your enemies, see them driven before and to beat every arcade game in MAME.

I bet you can't do it without using cheats
Also, you shouldn't use savestates either since you can't do it on real cabs.

Re: Has anyone ever beaten every slot game in MAME? new [Re: OldSchoolGamer]

Actually, you can 'complete' a slot machine game, just make sure you've gone through every single winning combination, from the minimum prize right up to jackpot (doesn't matter what the bet multiplier or number of paylines selected is, since it would literally take decades to get every single win on each and every payline on bet 1, then with a bet of 2, 3, 4, 5 etc).

If a game doubles the win with a wild (like Queen of the Nile, not working yet in MAME though), you have to go through each combination again until both non-wild wins and wild wins have been crossed off. Scatter prizes also count, so you have to get each combination of those (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 on screen, if they count as wins for a certain amount; most games don't pay for 1 scatter however)

If the free game feature has a set multiplier (like Queen of the Nile where it is x3, or x6 with the wild Cleopatra) or multiple types (like Indian Dreaming; the free game wilds are x3, x5, or when both x3/x5 symbols substitute for the same win they count as x15), you then have to get every win with the bonus multiplier(s) during the free games.

Off-topic, five 'Indian Chiefs' x15 on a full bet of 500 credits (20 bet x 25 credits for the 243 ways play) is considered jackpot on this game (however, most people consider THE jackpot as being one specific combination: It is possible to have 'double' Indian Chief/wilds on the same reels in reels 2 and 4 at the same time, effectively having a x24 Indian Chief win in the free games - x3, x5, x15 and x1 all on the one spin - since the x3 and x5 wilds have an Indian Chief symbol two spots up or down from the wild, if it lands in the right position). You can also get the same win playing 81 ways (reels 1-4), which in this example would cost 300 credits since the 81 way bet is only 15 credits instead of 25 (and multiplied by 20 for the max bet). However, a 5 of a kind win on 81 way play is only possible if the fifth symbol is in the middle position of the last reel.

If there's a bonus prize in the feature, every single bonus amount has to be won as well to consider completing the game. For example, 3 Bags Full [3bagflvt, 3bagflnz] has bonus bags of 40, 50, 60, 70 and 100 credits, and if 3 matching amounts are selected on the bonus, the player can pick a larger bonus bag containing an even higher amount, which also varies. On Autumn Moon [autmoon], the game itself has bonus symbols (instead of a second screen) which have to line up left to right on a line in the first 3, 4 or 5 reels. There are various prizes up to 1000 credits on the reels. On Top Gear, you would have to enter all five places during the drag race to win the different bonus amounts. On Gone Troppo and Caribbean Gold II (MAME's set is missing 2 graphics ROMs unfortunately), each bonus selection also has different amounts.

Yea, maybe I could have worded the question better.

And I also do not plan nor want to beat every game. When I said that I hoped to achieve this feat, I worded it wrong. There are some genres that I do not like very much. So the games in those genres that I don't like, I don't/won't play. And in the genres that I do enjoy, if I don't enjoy a particular game in that genre, than I'm not going to force myself to play it just so I can see the ending sequence or just so I can chalk it up as one more game that I finished. I only play games that I enjoy playing.

I like exploring new and obscure arcade games.

Basically, the responses from people that I was looking for were responses such as the amount of games they have beaten/seen the ending sequence. Or if someone has almost 'finished' a particular genre.

I'm not being technical about this. Whether you used cheats on those games or not. Whatever, it doesn't matter. If you've 'finished' a particular genre except a few games because they were too hard, boring, not fun, etc., then you can say that you practically 'finished' that genre. Like I said, I'm not being technical about it.

Yes, while playing arcade games, I try to use the least amount of coins. The old "Golden Era" games, I try to see how far I can get with the default 3 lives or one coin.

After hearing the responses that I was looking for, I was going to follow up with questions such as:

What game in that genre did you find the most difficult?
What game did you find the most rediculous?
What game did you enjoy the most?
Etc...

I like to hear the opinions of people that have played most of a certain library or genre. For example, people who have 'finished' the entire NES library. I like to hear their opinions on NES games because they have played almost every NES game. And not only did they play almost every game, but they played each game for longer than a few minutes. Because if they 'finished' the game, that means they played it for a long enough time that they can have a solid opinion of the game and all the various aspects of the game.
