I tried and could not duplicate with default settings -hlsl. The only other bug I know of in 0.144u2 for galaga (fixed for u3) was an autosave bug - do you use -autosave?

Thanks for the reply, no autosave here!
Its very strange as Galaga begins to POST all the way up to showing the white grid (with HLSL effects applied) then gives me a black screen after the white grid. Galaga plays blind at this point, changing in game sliders and reseting has no effect.
The only way for me to see anything beyond the white post grid is to disable HLSL.

Galaga + HLSL works fine for me in .144u2
You probably have some settings or files from an older version of MAME that's causing a conflict somewhere.

I have the same thing happen. Galaga screen goes blank after the white grid appears. I can get the game to display correctly for a bit if I hit the tab key when it is loading. I am using Win7 x64 and mame x64 .146u1 . If I disable hlsl it is also fine. Is Galaga still a problem for you or where you able to fix it?

HLSL runs entirely on your video card. Now, with that reminder, what information have you forgotten to report? And don't skimp on the driver version.

Oh I see how its going to be .. Well let me tell you what I do know. I have the same problem on 2 different machines (different hardware all around) Machine 1 Win7 X64 PRof - GIGABYTE ATI Radeon HD6950 Machine 2 Win7 X64 Prof - Ati Radeon 6570
I have tried different Graphics Drivers. Both Machines are amd CPU Have Directx 9
I can give more detail but It will have to wait until I get home.
Running Game in Vertical mode on a cocktail table
Hmmm what else...

How much VRAM on both, and what resolution were you running? (And does it work if you run lower-res?)

The machine running mame has the 6570 and it has 2 gigs graphics memory ddr3. The games are running at 100% and so is galaga as F11 will display that information on the black screen. The resolution is 1600x1200. Trying 800x600 .. no difference. Video Driver 8.92 and also tried 8.84. Is there anyone here with Win7 Pro x64 with LCD and amd graphics that can try galaga and see if it blanks out after the white grid? I run groovymame but it doesn't matter because when I switch back to regular mame it still has the problem.

HLSL enabled? The thing is the game works fine without hlsl enabled so I don't think its a bad rom. I will try 146u2 instead of 146u1. I am running out of ideas on this one. the simularaties between my 2 computers is the 6,000 series GPU and they both run amd processors.

I think we can solve this if you use proper HLSL settings and executed mame64 -cc which creates a clean mame.ini (rename or backup your old one if needed)
Once you have everything setup again, if you could pastebin your mame.ini settings it might help figure things out.
Downloading and running MAME from a fresh path might not be a bad idea as well, incase it possibly fixes your issue.
Redownload the attached self compiled build that's posted here. http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/sho...;new=1341268490
These settings are probably not the best, but I enjoy the way they look, so try them and see if they get you past the black screen.
Also, the attached MAME I suggested has correct HLSL and artwork files for HLSL, so not having the exact files could be what the problem might be.

b2k24: I can't thank you enough. Your ini file is what fixed my problem. after I used your ini it worked so I was hell bent on figuring this out. I went line by line with your .ini and my .ini and it was the last setting that did it. The setting is yiq_phase_count 1 . Mine was set to a value of 2. There were other problems I had but I didn't mention them because I knew if I got galaga working they would work as well and I didn't want to overwhelm everyone with a list but here is what that 1 setting fixed.
Burgertime when rotated for cocktail and cocktail bit set would blank out on the first players second turn. Same with Digdug. Galaga would blank after the white grid. I am sure there are other but those are the ones I knew of.
I guess I am curious as to what that setting does and I thought if the setting yiq_enable 0 was set that the values below would be ignored.
Again thanks for all the help guys.

All I did is use these to fix it. Anyway how I do the rest without the fishbowl effect? I done the scanlines effect and the screen fix part for Galaga.
yiq_scan_time 52.599998 yiq_phase_count 1
Using MAME 0.147 with a clean mame.ini. Gotta be the timing issue.

setting pincushion to all zeros will eliminate the "fishbowl effect"
These settings by John IV are really good and I'm enjoying them now for MAME
