Forbidden versions...?

I was just scavenging my hard disk for old emulation stuff and found a folder named "forbidden" under MAME. It contained executables from versions 0.36 beta 10 to 0.36 beta 16. Now I seem to remember these versions being pulled off for some reason but can't figure out for the life of me what is was. Don't know if it was because some Neo-Geo games or perhaps source code used without permission. Can anyone shed a light on this? I got curious about now.

All of those releases are posted on mamedev.org (source and binaries). So they're not forbidden by any obvious definition of that term. Maybe your parents wouldn't let you play MAME at that time? ;-)

They were "forbidden" and not on the website for a time supposedly because of pong. They were re-added at some later date.

Thanks for clarifying that up.
R. Belmont, didn't you know that? They may not be forbidden NOW, but they were at that time, I distinctively remember that.

I knew but didn't care. The fact is that those versions are not forbidden now, and now is rather more relevant than 11 years ago.

Your answer wasn't what I wanted to know. You knew what I wanted to know, you just didn't care to reply accordingly. Therefore, your reply was useless, and as such, was much better kept to yourself.

Perhaps with a little thought, research, and ingenuity, he perhaps was hoping you could figure out the answers to your own questions.
Instead you expect to be spoon-fed what your too lazy to figure out.
Also, that's a good way to talk to someone that has contributed to MAME and other projects for over 10 years. If your gonna throw a hissy fit then don't expect other questions you might have to be answered as well.

I respect RB as much as the next fanboy, but even I found the second post to be a little penisy. We all have our moments I guess.

I respect MAMEdevs for what they contributed. Even I contributed to MAME development for quite some time, after MAMETesters was first initiated. That's not the point here; the point is R. Belmont, independently of being a MAMEdev, didn't care to address my question properly, and he admitted that. The fact he's an accomplished MAMEdev doesn't excuse him for treating a legitimate question like he did and even if that reply was given to me by Nicola Salmoria or Aaron Giles, I still wouldn't care. One can make all the great additions and fixes to MAME he wants, one stilll doesn't need to reply like he doesn't care about the answer. Being that the case, it's better to stay in silence.
Besides that, R. Belmont never hinted anything about me better looking for the answer myself. He just wanted to play smartass with me.

You asked why they were forbidden. I did the minimal checking I would hope someone asking that question would do (checking if those versions were on mamedev.org) and replied that they are not forbidden. Dredging up 11 year old emu-politics can have no good effect on the current project, so I chose to avoid that aspect.

Might've been those gambling games at that time too.
At any rate, it's ancient history now.

I guess us people who are in the so-called "emu scene" for such a long time can see things clearer. Thanks italie and redk9258 for speaking up your minds. You know I'm not a troll.

Sure, but my curiosity was exactly about this ancient history. What, just because it's in the past, one is not allowed to ask about it? I spoke up my mind, Stiletto, because I didn't like the "I don't care" attitude. H@P said it was about pong, and I liked his reply because I really didn't remember. Now you added it could have been about gambling games, which at the time were undesirable, but not now. Good to know, thank you. Both replies were useful and right within context of my question.
It is my honest thinking that, if somebody has nothing constructive to say about something, then it's better to keep his thoughts to himself. Otherwise, he might be taken for a troll.
Anyway this has taken too much forum space, I drop the subject.

Clearly my post went over your head. Unless you are also speaking facetiously in which case your post went over my head.

He was making a point. You posted that people should stop posting on this thread. So you did the very thing you think people shouldn't do. Then by your post, you triggered someone to post a response. So your own actions are causing further posts on this subject.
Not dissing you in anyway, just explaining the meaning of his post

I guess it wasn't obvious but here I was referring to the irony of people posting in threads to tell people to stop posting in the thread (as opposed to, I don't know, just not reading the thread if they're not interested).
> So I would like to add, why do people keep > posting to this thread? Enough already!
Here I was calling out how I was adding my own ironic statement to the thread, telling people to stop posting by myself doing exactly what I was telling other people to stop doing.
I realize now that I was not clear enough in my attempt at ironical humor here and that my intentions were misread by everyone. Mea culpa. I'll try to be less cryptic next time.
