I run MAME 'from itself'.
If I run it via command line in a fresh directory - or from, say, MAMEPGUI - the game loads, but I get an error. With 143u9, it was this:
----------------------------------------------------- Exception at EIP=01E72587 (not found): ACCESS VIOLATION While attempting to read memory at 0000000C ----------------------------------------------------- EAX=0000000C EBX=0029FD90 ECX=7FFDF000 EDX=003F4528 ESI=00338CD8 EDI=0042035E EBP=00000000 ESP=0022E790 ----------------------------------------------------- Stack crawl: 00000000: 01E72587 (not found)
With .144, I get THIS:
----------------------------------------------------- Exception at EIP=00E6EC19 (not found): ACCESS VIOLATION While attempting to read memory at 0000000C ----------------------------------------------------- EAX=0000000C EBX=002A8008 ECX=7FFDF000 EDX=003F4528 ESI=00282F10 EDI=002004DE EBP=0022E798 ESP=0022E780 ----------------------------------------------------- Stack crawl: 0022E798: 00E6EC19 (not found) 0022E7B8: 00E39D11 (not found) 0022E7D8: 00E39EF9 (not found) 0022E888: 00E1DB49 (not found) 0022E8B4: 7E418734 (GetDC+0x006d) 0022E91C: 7E418816 (GetDC+0x014f) 0022E94C: 7E42A013 (IsWindowUnicode+0x00a1) 0022E96C: 7E42A998 (CallWindowProcA+0x001b) 0022E994: 4FDF6407 (CheckFullscreen+0x0657) 0022E9C0: 7E418734 (GetDC+0x006d) 0022EA28: 7E418816 (GetDC+0x014f) 0022EA7C: 7E428EA0 (DefWindowProcW+0x0180) 0022EAA4: 7E428EEC (DefWindowProcW+0x01cc) 0022EB7C: 7C90E473 (KiUserCallbackDispatcher+0x0013) 0022EBA8: 7E418734 (GetDC+0x006d) 0022EC10: 7E418816 (GetDC+0x014f) 0022EC40: 7E42A013 (IsWindowUnicode+0x00a1) 0022EC60: 7E42A998 (CallWindowProcA+0x001b) 0022EC88: 4FDF6407 (CheckFullscreen+0x0657) 0022ECB4: 7E418734 (GetDC+0x006d) 0022ED1C: 7E418816 (GetDC+0x014f) 0022ED58: 7E42927B (GetParent+0x016c) 0022ED78: 7E4292E3 (SendMessageW+0x0049) 0022ED98: 00E1BAB6 (not found) 0022EE48: 01456BD5 (not found) 0022F7A8: 0152E8C9 (not found) 0022FB38: 0170D69E (not found) 0022FEB8: 00E17C51 (not found) 0022FEF8: 0195519E (not found) 0022FFC0: 00401422 (not found) 0022FFF0: 7C817077 (RegisterWaitForInputIdle+0x0049)

I've never read that. Can you provide links? MAMEDev does not support ANY front end as far as i know.

I don't see what this has to do with "1. I thought it has been said numerous times that MAMEPGUI was no longer supported by the MAME team."

My internet connection is continually having problems over the last 24 hours where it is up and down like a yoyo. In these circumstances I can't exactly go searching through forums. The links I gave were already bookmarked so didn't go hunting.
>"1. I thought it has been said numerous times that MAMEPGUI was no longer supported by the MAME team."
Change it to read "...not supported by the MAME team." if you like.
Damn internet has reconnected a dozen times in the typing of this message. Definately at the ISP end or bad weather.
Still, for someone that has been around this board for a short amount of time where I might say "no longer supported" and for someone that has been around for a long time and would have more of an idea to say "never supported" at the end of the day the end result is the same.

You're missing the point, perhaps because you're focused on the MAMEPGUI part. The salient part of this is that in several instances, including and in particular baseline (as that is what I'm using with MAMPGUI, besides running it from command line), I'm getting error reports on game exit.
Next: was your error message the same as either of mine?
Further, I can head over to MESS - but was first posting here.
Lastly, another instance: at game exit with MAMEUI, it crashes and shows the message below. Deleting the cfg file per game stops the error message - however, upon game re-load, I get a 'can't create d3d object' AND it says something about dbgeng.dll . (What is this dll? I picked it up, but it won't 'register'. I get some regsvr error saying the entry point was not found....)

Either use command line with official MAME or use QMC2/GameEX/MAMEload/ (anything that's not hacked or patched to keep it breathing and surviving) with official MAME and you won't see any crazy errors.

Pehaps you missed the entirety of my efforts explained? And, according to Robbbert, it's a MAME 32bit issue.

And so it was. All good now - in all the above-mentioned variants and configurations.
