Network emulation?
#269008 - 11/19/11 12:09 AM

I have not looked into this for a long time but I know there are various netplay builds of MAME now and I wondered if there were any up to date (or not) builds that supported local networking as the original games did?

I'm talking about driving games really since they are the most obvious (and I'm looking into making mine a twin) but I gues it'd apply to any network games.

I know nebula is networkabe but I wondered (hoped) MAME in some form was too?

I'm guessing it's possible to just have the emulator run on one machine and have multiple displays to achieve the same effect but it's not really possible for, say, ridge racer, san francisco rush or really any 3d game (while is most of the networkable games I guess).

Original-machine networking isn't yet possible (core support for emulated drivers accessing the network is coming courtesy of MESS, but it'll also require a pretty decent rework for each driver). Your best option is to use MAMEHub right now.

Well if it's coming that's a positive, even if it takes a while. I'm pretty sure nebula will hold me over until then.

Out of interest how come MESS has it? Saturn? PSX?

Next on the agenda: keeping my fingers crossed dragon king gets round to hooking up outputs for the racing games.

A bit OT but didn't he submit a near complete Outrun output hookup a while back? It didn't seem to make it into the official build at least.

you seem to forget that MESS emulates also computers and not only consoles

In particular, MESS has recently added working support for ethernet cards in most MacIntosh II drivers (and some basic support for ISA ethernet cards in PC-AT drivers), so that you can use your own Internet connection and Netscape on the emulated Mac to browse the web

And, if there were a Trapper Keeper Futura 2000 and you wanted to communicate/merge/hybrid a Wellington Bear Calculator to it, MESS would be the place for that

I actually had no idea MESS even added computers.

don't get me wrong, but you seem to have been somewhere else for 10 years

MESS had "working" support for C64, ZX81 and Apple ][, among the others, already back in 2001

http://web.archive.org/web/20010711102300/http://mess.emuverse.com/

Anyway, many computer drivers have been broken for years (e.g. the c64) and this contributed to the very bad reputation that has characterized MESS in the early 2000s (and that we are still fighting to get free from)

Starting from 2006-2008, however, MESS has become better and better in basically all supported systems (including c64, which is currently working in his full magnificence ) and I suggest you to give it a try, given that most options are shared with MAME (except for the basic syntax which is

mess *system* -cart /path/to/the/software/item [1]

instead of mame *game* ), including HLSL filters or GLSL ones, depending on your OS.

[1] replace -cart with -cass or -flop, where suitable, or with -listmedia to know the options supported for each system

Not only that, but it's basically never been done before.
