High scores/initials won't be saved if cheats are enabled?

In MAMEUI, It seems that when cheats are enabled the high scores and initials that you enter in at the beginning of the game and/or at the end of the game do NOT get saved.
An example is when I enter my initials at the beginning of the game "NBA Hangtime". If I enter my initials at the beginning of that game, my record/initials do not get saved if I use cheats.
Is this true?
And if this is true, then why does this happen? Why did they program it this way so it won't save high scores and initials if cheats are enabled?

Yes.

Because you didn't get the high score fairly, so it doesn't count.

Ok, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.
I don't remember reading anywhere on the MAME FAQ regarding if you use cheats that high scores and initials won't be saved. Maybe they should add that part to the FAQ.
